A diamond merchant of New York city is reported as saying that when the African mines were discovered there was very nearly a panic, which was averted by a coinbi nation of large dealers who banded together and bought a control of all the dia mond mines. Two great companies, the Central Diamond Mining Com pany and the Kimberly Company, practically cont rol the diamond mar ket of the world, and no new dia monds are put on the market ex cept as they permit; and the price is kept where it is by the combination, and is not influenced by supply or demand. - One of the best paid trades in the United States is that 6f the green glass blowers. Attheir convention in New York city last .week Presi dent Tomliu said that, the average wages of the men were $25 per week, which is nearly; double the average earning in many skilled trades. The men are employed for only ten months in the year, and enjoy- two months7 vacation every year when the green glass works are closed. The trade is well organized, and there is not much complaint of sur plus labor in it. The .main reason of the high wages of the men is the unhealthfulness of the trade and its great strain upon the constitution. There are very few old men among the blowers in the green glass works. Ketlncing ho Siirpln,. The disposition of the Surplus in the U. S. Treasury engages the at tention of our Statesmen, but a more vital question lias our attention. and that is the reduction of the Sur plus Gomsumptives.. Since the dis covery : ana - introduction of Dr. King's New Discovery for Consump tion, there has been a marked de crease in the - mortality : from this dreaded disease, and it is possible to still farther 1 educe the number of Consumptives. How? By keeping constant ly at hand a bottle of Dr. King's New Discovery and using ac cording to directions, upon the ap pearance of the first symptoms, such as a Cough, a Cold, a Sore Throat, Chest or Side Pain. Taken thus early a cure is guaranteed. Trial bottles free at Win. H. Green &Co's Drug Store. A HEALTHY GROWTH. : -Acker's Blood Elixir lias gained a firm hold on the American people and is acknowledged to be.superior to all " other preparations. Mr. Roe was born in 1838 on the banks; of the Hudson River, south of New burg. He was graduated from Wil- liams College and Auburn Theolog ical Seminary. ' He enlisted in the war as chaplain. At the close of the war he became the pastor of the Presbyterian Church at Highland Falls, New York, where he remain ed until 1874, when he removed to Cornwall. While at Highland Falls he wrote "Barriers Burned Away," and so great was its success and that of "Opening a Chestnut Burr," which was written to test whether he should earn his living by preach ing or writing, that his true sphere in life became xlain to him, and in 1874 he retired from the ministry and removed to Cornwall where he continued to live. He was author ity on horticulture and wrote sev eral works on the subject, as well as novels. In the preface, to his novel "Without a Home," he tells how he came to be art author. The burn ing of Chicago made a powerful iiu pression on him,' and after spending several days among the ruins and studying the striking features of the catastrophe, he wrote hisfirst novel. "Barriers Burned Away." The six teen works, mastlv novels, which he has produced have hod an aggre gate sale of about 750,000 copies.'' Of "Barriers Burned Away," 69,000 copies have been sold; of "Opening a Chestnut Burr" 08,000; "Without a Home," 60,000; "From Jesr to Earnest," 60,000; "Near to Nature's Heart," 53,000; "A Knight of the XIX Century," 53,000: ."A Day of Fate," 50,000; and the sale of other works from his pen ranges from 25, 000 to 45,000. Mr. Roe's latest work, "Miss "Lou," is in the printers' hands. Peculiar In the combination, proportion ,and preparation of its ingredients, Hood's Sarsaparilla accomplishes cures where other preparations entirely fail. Peculiar in its good name at home, which is a "tower of strength abroad," peculiar in the phenome nal sales it has .attained. Hood's Sar saparilla is the most successful med icine for purifying the blood, giving strength, and creating an appetite. ELY'S CREAM HALM Catarrh Cleanses the Nasal passages. Hood's Sarsaparilla is a peculiar medicine, possessing, by virtue of its peculiar combination, proportion, ' and preparation, curative power superior to any other article. A Boston lady who knew what she wanted, and whose example is worthy imitation, tells her experience below: r ; To In one store where I went to buy Hood's Sarsaparilla the clerk tried to induce me buy their own instead of Hood's ; he told me their's would last longer; that I might take it on ten days' trial; that if I did not like it I need not pay anything, etc. But he could not prevail on me to change. I told him I knew what Hood's Sarsaparilla was. I had taken it, was satisfied with it, And did not want any other. Mood's "When I began taking Hood's Sarsaparilla I was feeling real miserable, suffering a great deal with dyspepsia, and so weak that at times I could hardly stand. I looked, and had for some time, like a person in con sumption. Hood's Sarsaparilla did me so much good that I wonder at myself sometimes, and my friends frequently speak of it." Mks. Ella. A.
