VONGLAHN, WUmlngtoa, N, c r 1 H VOL. XII. Farming ami Politics In Pender. Pinky Woods, N. C., Aug. 2, '88. Dkar RKViKv:-The old time cus tom of our farmers to annual I v n- A isemble around the festive board af ter the crops are "laid by" and dis cuss farming, politics, good eatiuir. &c, still prevails in this nrosneroiis section of Pender Pender countv. These are nft sectarian meetings. vfiiici vi unit?! iiiiiueiice COM- . I . 1 r. . . iroi Tneni. it is tlie snoiitaneous on oijj Avaterme ons am nt hr crops, aiuiwui jiju, ui-iiiiv nam ciuer, laugn anu grosv tat. Of course the youujj people come in for a share of the enjoyment. The Lonjr Creek band is present to add a (leliirtited zest to the arrav of fashion here and to "call the fiir- ures." Ah, what a delightful time . . . - T9 "Their feet beneath their petti coats, Like little mice steal in and out. And oh, they dance in such a way, No sun upon an Easter day Is half so .line a siirht." And these irood people have much to rejoice over. For in this section and all we can hear from, there is but one verdict, the best crons known in ten years. Politics is beinir freelv discussed now that the crops are "hilled up."1 Democracy in the county is strong er than ever, anil everywhere we learinpf a growing determination of redeeming Pender. The State and National tickets will be stronglv supported. In county politics the leading ofiice of ShenlT is tlie ab sorbing theme. A fair interpreta tion of nublic sentiment, as we gath er from this lartre assemblage from quite all over the county, seems to centre upon W. W. Larkins, Esq., as the candidate for Sheriff. Public opinion is generally unerr ing, and this is so, because public interest is considered, and this or that man is adopted as an instru ment for public good. This is what we call the office seeking the man. From a happy combination of cir cumstances for the Democratic party in Pender, it is generally conceded that Mr. Larkins is the man for Sheriff. It is a fair test the people have, that if a man can successfully man age his own business he can that of the public. For years Mr. Larkins has been a prosperous merchant at Long Creek and is justly popular throughout the county. He is a life-long Democrat, and is destined to be as potent a factor for good in his county as was his aged father, GoL W. S. Larkins, who is now clos ing a long life of usefulness for his fellow-man and country. He can give the bond, and the people want him for his availability and for his unsullied private and political life. Yesterday proved to be quite a lively day at the Hummocks. Dur ing the fore part of the day the visj itors there enjoyed themselves with sailing, fishing, bathing, strolling and chatting, but towards night the fun commenced. Just as the dark ness began to gather a black cloud came up in the Northeast and al j 1 i most oeiore one was aware 01 its ex- istence a neavv squall swept over the place and made things lively for about ten or fifteen minutes, taking 1 j... - l .. .11 . 1 uais, parasois, umoreuas, anu in fact everything of light weight with it. In two seconds (by Capt. Sas wer s wai.cn, 01 course; ine air was filled with flying objects, some of them 111 human form flying after their head-gear. The storm soon blew over, however, without doing any damage, save in the interest of the hatters, as several hats were blown into the water, and every thing became quiet again, except old ocean and the waiters at the hotel. But this quietude was short lived, for just as everybody had got seated at the supper table or eugug ed in conversation with somebody's sister or daughter, a most unearthly yell of "I've got him," rent the air and penetrated to the quiet repose of the sandiiddler and green lizard and brought allth.e occupants of the hotel to the front, causing hungry mortals to leave a square meal and sighing souls to forsake their fair companions. By this time Capt. Anthony Canova had reached the dining-room,' coatless and hatless aud shouting like a frightened Com anche, "We've caught him." There was a'rush to the front of the hotel aud as some of the ladies espied Mr. Cecil's white cap dodging around on.the bridge they inquired if that was what had been caught, and if it was, get some one to shoot it. In the meantime, however, Mr. Cecil had secured help and was now able to tell the crowd that he had caught a shark, a real live shark, one of the man-eating species, an old shovel nose fellow. This somewhat calm ed the excitement, and with the as sistance of four men and a boat, he succeeded in landing his sharkship on terra flrma After killing him ! some one susrerested that the shark J j be carried to the hotel aud put on ; tho niflT7n wh prt n.11 could see hi in. He wag measured and proved to be . 6 feet 1 inch Ions'. This is the hrst shark of any size that has eyer been caught at the Hqiumocks, but we understand that two or three were seen there yesterday during the day sporting in the channel- j On yesterday Mr. Will. A-Willsdn, ; City Clerk and Treasurer, paid out j $31,076.50, the amount due for bonds j and coupons for the month of July. Personal. Dr. Pritchard arrived Rev in the j city to-day from London, via New ! York, where he ha? been for two j moiiths past. He will fill his pulpit m the First Baptist Church on Sun day at the usual hours. Yesterday's Rowing Race. The first race'of the newly formed Recreation Ciub came-off yesterday j at G:45 o clock, as announced. As the time drew near a dark bank of clouds rose in the northeast and seemed to threaten .a heavy storm, which no doubt deterred a great many persons from attending; but for all this, the river front near Market street dock was thronged with people, and many spectators were gathered at other points and watched the spirited contest, be tween rival crews, from start to finish, seemingly with the greatest enjoyment. The course was from Market street dock down the river to a buoy op posite Church street, thence up the river to a buoy opposite the New York steamer's wharf, thence down the river to the starting point. The judges were Mr. J. H. Boatwright, Mr. J. F. LeGrand, and Mr.Forshee. All boats were ordered to report promptly at (:30 p.m., but when the time came only three appeared the two other boats belonging to the club not being in readiness. The boats which entered ere "The Nettle" manned by Robert Lewis, bow oar; Willie Grant, No. 2; Joe Hooper, No. 3; Murray Grant, stroke; Edgar Hinton, coxswain. "Leona," manned by L. Burnett, bow-oar; J. L. Keen, No. 2; Oscar Watson No. 3; Charley Harper, stroke, and P. Heinsberger, Jr., cox swain. "Little Joe," manned by Joe Smith, bow-oar; R. Cant we 11, No. 2; J. B. Willard, No. 3; Albert Burr, stroke; W. N. Bowden, coxswain, The choice of position was wonby the Leona, which took the ricrht of the river, the Nettle the left, and the Little Joe between the two. The boats got off well together at the signal gun, fired at forty-four minutes and fifty- seconds after six o'clock, the Little Joe quickly tak" ing the lead; with the Leona about a boat:s length and the Nettle some fifty or seventy-five feet behind when tlie boats passed Dock street. They held their positions well until the stake-boat opposite Church street was reached when the Leona with a spurt took the inside and came around on the upward turn just ahead of the Little Joe. From this point to the finish, tlie race wTas a hot one but the crew of the Leona not only held their own but in creased their lead and came in ahead by several lengths. The time was as follows: Leona 10 minutes, 43 seconds; Little Joe, 11 minutes; Nettle, 11 minutes, 18 sec onds. The course wras a little over a mile in length. The spectators enjoyed the sport immensely, and greeted the winning boat with hearty cheers. There will be another race by the Cl"ub,6ver the same course,on Thurs day, Aug. 9th, at 6:30 p. m. A business meeting of the Club is called for Monday afternoon at 7:30 o'clock, at Messrs. Smith & Bo'at wright's office.
