Wilmington.. N.c 1: VOL XII. We notice that -. the Alprnnrtrfn Progress rnakes a detailed repor upou the action' of the committee which has agreed to report favor ably upon the bill introduced by Gen.,.I,ee the jlepresentiitive from the Alexandria district,' known as the "Lee Pure food bill." This bill seems to be leveled directly at one article, and that is lard, into which a EMHithem nroduet. nur fnttnn seed oil, is frequently found to be au iiiKredieiit. Hon. C. W. McCltim- my, Representative from our adjoin ing district, the Third, is a .member of the committee aiid he opposed the bill. He is reported as beiusr "iinutterably, iinchangeably, and eternally opposed to the Lard bill, which was simply intended to bene lit One set of maun fact n re rs by tax" ing another and in doing it pile up more unnecessary internal revenue. He favbrs general pure food legisla tion, provided the proper constitu tional limits are respected." We have not seen the bill agreed upon by the committee, but we shrewdly suspect that its principal effect will be in boosting the lard market and making consumers pay iubre money for the same article than they now do. There is auother effect, however, which will surely result, if the bill becomes a law, and that will be to 'add to the already big surplus in the over Ho wing treas ury, for there will be a "lardine" or something of that kind manufac tured under the' provisions of the bill and the sacred influence of an infernal internal revenuetax. But cotton seed oil, which is the only decent ingredient besides hog fat in lard, is a Southern "product and must therefore be taxed for all it is worth.. We want to see all of these adulterations choked out and we want to see the "adulterers" held up to the public view but it seems to us that the right way to do.this is not to pile up any more of the odious war taxes. " As for Maj. McClammy we glory in his spunk in talking plainly and to the point. He is a North Caro lina Democrat and believes in doing all he can to promote the principles of his party here at home. In this we are with him. This is not Re publican doctrine but pure Demo cratic gospeL coming flown to us from two successive conventions, as tne solemn ana aeiiDerate con victions of the Democratic party in North Carolina The largest Soldiers' Reunion ever known in North Carolina was held at Pittsboro on Thursday. The oc casion was notable also as being the first of the kind on which Senators Ransom and Vance had met. The Ncios and Obaem,cr's report from Pittsboro says: ""The largest gathering of Confed erate veterans ever known in the State was held here to-day. There were more than 10,000 people here to witness there-union and there, were 1,000 actual veterans in line, while hundreds or others were outside the procession. Senator Vance was met at the depot by a most enthusiastic muitituae on nis arrival weunesciay night and a similar demonstration was made in behalf of Senator Ran- t j som, wno arrived mis morning. Never has there been such a crowd in Chatham -and never has more en thusiasm been displayed anywhere. The procession formed at Court House Square and marched to Kel vin Grove, .where the speaking was had. Senator Vance spoke first, dwelling in most eloquent termon the splendor of Southern valor as displayed on the field during the war. and he was followed by Sena tor Ransom, who spoke in the same glorious strain and in his usual superb manner. It is seldom that our two noble Senators have been met together at any North Carolina gathering; never before have they beeu together at a uouiederate re union. The meeting them both to day by their multitude of friends liere has been a pleasure oeyonu ex pression and one appreciated by the old soldiers in the highest degree. There were twenty companies rep resented in the reuuion, and Col. iJ. R. Lane, of Chatham, was chief marshal of the parade. The SilerCity band furnished the music for the oc casion and elicited deserved encomi ums on every hand. Moore county was represented as well as Chatham, and so were Randolph, Guilford and Durham. There were 6 veterans of two wars, the - Mexican and our late unpleasantness. Altogether it was a most successful and most enjoyable occasion.! n all respects. Too much praise cannot be awarded those who were instrumental in getting up the reunion and U is nothing more than right that especial mention should be madeofCapt.W.L. AUGUST success of the enterprise. It is safe to say there has never been a more enthusiastic reunion of Confederates and seldom has there been a larger one. . At one time the crowd formed a line down which our Senators went amid the most ' vociferous cheering, and it is estimated that that line was five deep aud certainly it stretched from the court-house to ; Kelvin Grove, a distance of half , a mile at least. After all, and contrary to the ex pectations of many, the appointed regatta of the Carolina Yacht Club took place yesterday, over the usuaj course at Wrightsville. The ; wind was so light that it was after 4 o'clock before the race was started and then there were but four yachts that entered. These were the Loulie, sailed by W. Atkinson; the Phantom, sailed by R. L. Williams; the Idler, sailed by Pembroke Jones, and the Pegotty, sailed by Norwood Giles. . The Pegotty won the race, beating the Idler by one minute and fifty-five seconds.- . The Loulie was the winner in the second class. The Phantom drop ped out before the race wastinished. The champion flag was presented by Mr. Win. Latimer, N and received in behalf of the Pegotty by Mr. Nor wood Giles in a pleasant, humorous speech. , The- prize - won by the Loulie was presented byMr. Wright Meares and received by Mr. Atkin son. The judges were Capt. Jno. H. Daniel and Messrs, McRee Cowan and D. M. Williams. The next regatta is announced for the 17th inst., when it is expected all yachts of the Uiub will appear and take part. How to Get a Cinder Out. Nine persons out of every ten with a cinder or any foreign sub stance in the eye will instantly be- eintorub the eye with one hand while hunting for their handkerchief with the other. They may, and sometimes do, remove the offending cinder,' but more frequently they rub till the eye becomes inflamed, bind a handkerchief " around the head and go to bed. This is all wrong. The better way is not to rub the eye with the cinder in it at all, but rub the other eye as vigor ously as yeu like. A few years since I was riding on the engine of a fast express. The engineer, an old school-mate of mine, threw open the front window, aud-J caught a cinder that gaye me the most excruciating pain. I began to rub the eye with both hands'.- "Let your eye alone and rub the other eye"(this from the engineer.) I thought he was chaffing me, ana worKeo tne harder. - l know you doctors think you know it all; but if you will let that eye alone and rub the other; the cinder will be out in two minutes," per sisted tpe engineer. I began to rub the other eye, and soon I felt the cinder down near the inner canthus, and made ready to take it out. "Let it alone and keep at the well eye 17 shouted the doctor pro teai. I did so for a minute longer, and lookiu in a small glass he gave me found the offender on my cheek. - Since then I have- tried it many times, and have advised many others, and have never known it to fail in one instance (unless it was as sharp as a piece of steel, or something that cuts into the ball and required an operation to remove it.)- Why it js so I do not know, and-that one mav save much suffering if one will et the injured eye alone and . rub the well eye.
