DIel Away From Home. We are sorry to learn of the death of Mr. Dolly Browning Gardner, only son of Capt. Junius D. Gardner which sad event occurred yesterday at Fernandina, Flal Information of the fact was received here to-day by Capt. Gardner in a telegram from Mr. Charles H. Leggett, stating that he died of congestion of the brain. Mr. Gardner was 28 years of age last January. He had been in Florida nearly a year. It Is St. Andrews Now. At a business meeting of the con tjf-reiration of the Second Presbv- C3 r-j - terianChurch, neld last night, it was agreed unanimously to change the name of the church and it will here after be known as St. -Andrew's Presbyterian Church. Everything is ready for beginning the work of erecting the new caurch and on the first day of October ground will be broken for this purpose. A Literary Treat. As will be seen by reference to our advertising columns, Rev. Dr. T. H. Pritchard will deliver a lecture qn 'European Travels'' at the Brooklyn Baptist Gljurch to-morrow night. The well-known ability of this distinguished divine, his eloquence and graphic descrip tive powers, coupled with his recent extensive travels in the countries he will describe, will make the ad dress a literary treat of exceedingly rare merit. A Christian SqlUer'3 Death. The sad news was received here by telegraph to-day of the death at McClenny, Florida, on yesterday, of Rey. Charles S. Snowden. He died literally in harness and at the post of dutv. His death was the fitting close of a noble, self-sacrificing life. It was upon the field of battle and. in the thickest of te strife. Ie was not nftready fqr the summons. IJe has gone to brighter scenes than this and his reward in the nex world is as sure and steadfast as was his faith and his works in this. But ah! for those who are left here his near ones and his dear ones-to mourn the death of this brave, true- hearted, faithful Christian soldier! To them it is a cup full of bitterness and sorrow but to him it is all bright and beautiful now, a rest from his labor nOi exactly that, for all of his life here was a labor of .love and a love of lahor but it is simply a glorified fruition of the seeds of mercy and charity and self-sacrifice sown in this world. His epitaph was ntteped nearly two thousand years before his birth, and by the Great Captain of his salvation. It is this: Greater love hath no man than this; that a man lay down his life for his friends. Only a Few Remarks. It is long since a more charming entertainment, one more pleasing in everj' way to a discriminating au dience, has been presented to the citizens of Wilmington than was that of "The Little Tycoon,"as ren dered at the Opera House last even ing. We have heard, of. scarcely any thing else today. It would seem as though everybody was present at the Opera House last night. Not only was the presentation excellent and enjoyable in the extreme but the management wis something wonderful. There were no stacre waits, no hitches of any kind, and everything worked smoothly-so smoothly, in fact, that it would have leen c.reditaule to a veteran oper atic troupe. Ouryouug prima donna, in her superb beauty, and with her divinegift ofsong.carried, captive all hearts. Ie.7. avery appearance was the signal for outbursts of vocifer ous applause. But all sang welj, all d id well, and sorely !ere can be no town in if orth Carolina, of the sixe of ours, that can show moregenuiue musical ability and a more tlior-j ough, cultivated "appreciation than ! this same old city on the sand lull. banks of the Cape Fear, I If you want a picture framed go to Heinsberger's. He has a large assortment of Mouldings to select from. - 't s The Little Tycoon. Probably the largest audience of years was that which assembled in the Opera House last evening to witness the rendition of the "Little Tycoon" by amateur talent in this city. The object of the entertain ment was for the benefit of the yel low fever sufferers. The cast was as follows: ' . General Knickerbocker, F. P.Boat wright Alvin Barry, II. M. Emerson. Ruf us Ready. U. M. Robinson. Lord Dolphin, R. S. French. Teddy, J. D. NuU, 9 1st axuL2nd Custom House Officers, Montgomery, C. C. Cut ts. Miss Hurricane, 'Miss A. B. Came ron. , Doljy Dimple, Miss Sch warz. Violet, Miss Annie DeRosset. The last act is "entirely Japanese'1 and the cestumes displayed render ed it jmrticularly beautiful. The part of the principal character, "Vio" let," was taken by Miss Annie De Rosset, whose delightful voice and charming personation ca.used her every appearance to be greeted with rounds of applause. Her rendition of the song, "The Moon and I," was rapturously received and was re peatedly encored. Miss Sch warz, in the role of "Dolly Dimple," render ed the character most charming ly. "Miss Hurricane," by Miss Cameron, was delightfully given. The character of "Gen. Knioker bocKer" was admirably presented hy Mr. Bqat w right and Mr. Emer-, sqij, in the doqbie role of "Alvin Barry" and the great Tycoon," rendered both parts very effectively. The duet between Miss DeRosset and Mr. Emerson received as it de served a perfect storm of applAuse. Mr. Robinson, as "Ruf us Ready," carried out his part exceedingly well. Mr. French, as "Lord Dol phin," Mr. Nutt, as "Teddy" and Mr. C C. Cutts, as "Montgomery," sustained, their respective solos excellently well. Mr. S. S. Curtiss presided at the piano. The per formance was a complete success all through. The net proceeds amounted to $$15 and, this sum will he forwarded, at once to Florida for the benefit of the sufferers there. It Was Not Yellow Feer. A few days ago Dr. Walter C. Murphy telegraphed to Raleigh that he had discovered a genuine case of yellow fever near Burgaw. This of course excited much interest and some feeling and an official investi gation of the fact has shown that Dr. Murphy was in error and that it was not a case of yellow fever.
