Some time- since he made a statement which -appeared In the public prints i and which, as alt tnitapbTceaT statements do. oc casioned much comment --Many letters were addressed to him upon the subject, to one cl . which Her. Dr. Mills replied: ; i Tour faTor with the Inclosed slip Is at band. The facts are these. -My wife was an invalid foi several years and, on our physk la ns recommen datlon,' used a certain prep'aration with very gTeat benefit: I received a letter Inquiring as to Its erects, tn which I replied as follows : I am a Presbyterian clergyman, a Doctor of Divinity, ot of medicine, but I am not afraid to say that t Duffy Formula and Duffy's Pure Malt Whiskey are the purest and most effective preparations as medicines, I know of, and my experience Is a large one. I am a temperance man and never used and never would advise any man or woman to use any intoxicant as a beverage, y recom mendation ox Duffy's rormuia ana wmstey was ' made after a thorough knowledge ci tueir great ralue as medicines. The statement was made ; deliberately and based upon Tarts, and I do not hesitate to stand by It. The many temperance , men who have written me on this subject do not seem to realize that I was a temperance man, In many cases, before they were born." ' The above correspondence speaks for Itself. It shows that, an earnest, honest, orthodox minis ter, who desires the greatest phvslcal as well as spiritual well-being of the world, does not hesl- tate to declare the truth about what he has . found to be pure, valuable and good. The world would certainly be far better if there were mora uch conscientious, honest and able men. Daily RovioxT'. Josn. T. Jam ks,- Editor & ProiVr. I and Democracy." ...... Wilmington. NV C. Don't you know its promises are like pJ crust T With men like iV. Bqnbow and Mr. Steele, life-Ion Radicals, the case is different. They have every thing to gain and nothingto lose by a third party movement. Every thing is fish that goes into their net, the net they are setting for the Democratic party, under the name of prohibition. , ; r 5 , - 4 lias the Radical party anything in its power that as sane men you can reasonably- hope to get," for which you would barter your .alle giance to the Democratic party, for which you would be willing to turn the State back; to- Radical rule? If you defeat the Democratic party at the next election, who will succeed to power in its place?! You know you will not. , You ..had -hard work even to" get out a .full 1 ticket. Wouldn't you have had a full ticket easy enough if it had even aa fight ing chance' to be elected? It must be the Radical party, then, that will succeed. Is it the Eadical 'party, then, that you old Democrats are working for as a matter of fact? Is the prohibition, or third party, when it comes down to hard pan, but another name for Dockery and the Radical party? Is there any bad blood, think you, between Dr. Benbow and Col. Dock ery? Oh no! Does Col. Dockery care any more for prohibition or prohibitionists to-day than he did six years ago, when he as ce nouncing them? Oh, no! Pause then, old friends, and con sider what you are doing before you take the final fatal step. Tlio Verdict Unanimous. W. D. Suit. DruffiM'st. Bippus. TO'PKOHIBITIONISTS ABOUT PRO HIBITION. Prohibitionists, like other folks, are of different kinds, some good, some bad and some indifferent. To the good prohibitionists a few words may not be out of place. To the bad and indifferent ones, those who are marching under prohibition col ors because they think by doing so they can best promote their heart's desire, that is to say, the success of the Radical xiarty, there is no need to say anything. They are joined to their idols. Let them alone. But to those prohibitionists who have gone into this third party movement conscientiously, espec ially those who have gone from the Democratic ranks, we say pause for a moment and consider what you are doing. If you accomplish any thing by your third party move ment it must be at the expense of the Democratic party. This is cer tain. No man can leave the Demo cratic ranks without aiding the Radical party. In the nature of things it is simply impossible for you to do more than to weaken the Democratic party and beat down the majority in the State. Don t you know this is so? Don't you know that it ij simply impossible for you to get a bigger vote than the Demo cratic party will get? What can you hope tor then, by your third partv movement, but to weaken the Democratic party and beat down its majority? Do you wish to do this? And if so, why should you wish to do this? The Demoaratic party is a party or the largest liberty. In its ranks are men of all creeds about matters non-political. It has certain political articles of fait h, but outside of them it seeks not to bind the con sciences of its members. The ques tion of prohibition is one of those non-political questions that it has never taken ground either for or against. In this it has been open. honest and consistent. Without be ing at all committed to the policy of prohibition, it was a Democratic Legislature that passed the act sub mitting the question of prohibition to the people in 1881. For the pas sage of that bill the Radicals, in their State Canvention assembled in Raleigh on 14th June, 1882, the same convention that made Oliver Dock- ery its standard-bearer for Congress, denounced the Democratic party and were in open alliance with the anti-prohibition party of that year. It has been under Democratic legis lation, too, that local option laws have passed, until the State is near ly shingled over with them. But has all this committed the party either for or against prohibition? Not at all. It has only committed the party to the doctrine that the people ought to decide such matters for themselves. What is the. record of tlie Radical party in the. premises? It is on all sides. Everything by turns and nothing long. Six years ago it was loud-mouthed in its denunciations of prohibition. Now it seeks to make friends with it. In 1881,in the gross language of Judge Russell, the Radical "vote was thrown away to save the grog shops.". This year Ire advises that their votes be given to the "temperance people" and the agbfc be roade against "drunkenness SEPTEMBER SQUIBS.
