' An Explanation. " , I
What is this "nervous trouble'
with which so liianv rpphi nnw rri h
afflicted? If you will remember afew i
years ago the word Malaria was com
paratively unkno wn,- to day it is as
common as any word iu the English
language, yet this word covers only
the meaning of another word used
bv our forefathers in times past. So
it is with nervous diseases, as they
and Malaria are intended to cover
what our grandfathers called Bil
liousne5.s-, and all are caused by trou
bles that arise from a diseased con
dition of the Liver which in per
forming its functions finding it can
not dispose of the bile through the
ordinary channel is compelled to
pass off through the system, causing
nervous troubles. Malaria, Bilious
Fever, etc. ' You who are suffering
can well appreciate a cure. We re commend

Platform of the Democratic Party
fl Xortla Carolina.
We again congratulate the people
of North Carolina on the continued
enjoyment of peace, good .govern
ment nnd general prosperity under
l)mocratic administration of the
affairs of the State which has now
been' unbroken for o many years;
upon the just and impartial enforce
ment of the law; upon' the increas
ing efficiency of our common school
system, and the progress made in
popular education; upon the im
provement and enterprise manifest
ed in all parts of the State. We
again challenge a comparison be
tween this state of things and the
outrages, crimes and scandals which
attended Republican ascendancy in
our borders. We pledge ourselves
to exert in the future as in the past
our best, efforts to promote the best
interests of the people of all sections
of the State. Affirming our adher
ence to Democratic principles as
heretoforH enunciated in the plat
forms of the party, it is hereby
Jienolvedy That no government 1 1 as
the right to burden its people with
taxes beyond the amount required
to pay its necessary expenses and
gradually extinguish its public debt;
and that whenever the revenues,
however derived. exceed this
amount, they should be reduced, so
as to avoid "a surplus in the treas
ury. That any system of taxation
winch necessitates the payment of
a premium of $270 by the goyern
ment on each $1,000 of its bonds,
taken up with the millions that
would otherwise lie idleinits vaults,
and paid to bondholders who pur
chased, in many instances, at less
than par, is undemocratic, oppres
sive and iniquitous and should be
refunded. The course of our Demo
cratic Representatives in Congress,
in their efforts to give relief to the
people from burdensome internal
revenue and tariff taxation, meets
with the approval of t he Democratic
party of this State and we respect
fully recommend that if they find it
impossible to give to our people an
the relief demanded, they support
anv just and practical measure pre
sented in Congress that will afford
a practical relief from such existing
burden
Slenolved, That while the details
of the methods by which the consti
tutional revenue tariff sheriff shall
be gradually reached are subjects
wmcn tne representatives 01 our
people at the national capital must
oe trusted toaaiust, we tnins: tne
customs duties should be levied for
the production of public revenue,
and the discriminations in their ad
justment should be such as will
place the highest rates on luxuries
and the lowest on the necessaries of
life, distribute as equally as possible
the unavoidable burdens of tax
ation, and confer the greatest good
on the greatest number.
Iiesolved, That we? as heretofore
favor, and will never cease to de
mand, the unconditional abolition
of the whole internal revenue sys
tem, as a war tax, not to be justified

A Private Affair.
A rather seedy looking stranger
entered fin Austin, Tex,, saloon the
other day, in which was quite a
party of men. and speaking low to
the proprietor, asked if he would
grant him a moment's interview on
a private subject. The proprietor
hesitated, notwithstanding his at
tire, and leaving the bar to his as
sistant he followed the man to a
remote corner'of the room to hear
what he had to say.
Glancing carefully around to make
sure that no one could hear, and
lowering his voice to an earnest
whisper, the stranger said,
"Would you trust me for a drink
of whiskey?"
"Trust you for a drink of whis
key?"'echoed the saloonist, getting
mad; "why," what the devil are you
so secret about it for? If yon want
ed trust why didn't you speak up
like a man and say so? What's the
use of being so blamed private about
it?" .
"I got a hint from Blaine, that's
why?"
Blaine? What's Blaine got to do
with it?"
" Whj you know he says trusts are
private affairs, although, and if you
trust me I don't want to make it
public, do I?"
The saloonist is an anti-trust Dem
ocrat, tout the fellow got his drink.
