Among these is the Central Labor Union in New York, which is also opposed to gambling in the neces saries of life. The following was unanimouslyadopted at a meeting of this body held on Sunday last: Within the past two weeks the power and danger of concentrated wealth have been emphatically dem onstrated, and within the same pe riod two colossal crimes against the people have been committed. As the representatives of the organized wage-earners of the iimpire Citv,we deem it to be our solemn duty to send out words of warning to a peo ple who seem to stand palsied in the presence of the grievous wrongs m tiicted upon them. A few days ago a .clique of con spirators, members of a sugar trust, organized under the laws of the State, met and decided to throw several hundred men out of work. Not a shadow of reason was offered for this cruel action, although pat ent to all who study events that it was a preliminary step toward pro ducing a corner in the sugar mar ket. The clique to which we have referred is-one of the many vicious combinations of capital which have been fostered by class legislation. and that legislation is the handi work of the dominant political par ties whose leaders are either part ners in or the attorneys for those capitalistic conspiracies. Like jug gernauts these trusts are moving across the breast of the Republic, crushing the manly hopes of labor, grinding defenceless wage earners into the dust, and annihilating all competitors who refuse to be part ners in the crime. " We direct your attention to an other evil which is no less criifiinal or deadly in its work, that is the custom of cornering the necessi ties of life. Day after day the papers have recently chronicled the mur derous work "of a speculator named Hutchinson. With the daring of an outlaw this man set to work to con trol the wheat market, andi with what success we know well. By means of his vast wealth, and through tricks in which speculators are adepts this man has been nn abled to levy a tribute on million of men and women aye, even on innocent children. Within a few weeks he has been enable to accumulate three millions dollars, every dollar of which is booty. He is but one of a too numerous class. We have pointed out the evil. Now as to a remedy. In the interest of justice, honesty and on behalf of an outraged people, we call upon the legislatures of the several States and Territories to pass at once such laws as will make membership in trusts or combina--tions or participation in so called corners a penal offense, punishable by long terms of imprisonment, and the confiscation by t he State of all possessions of the criminals. .- A famous Washington gambler, i$ is said, will soon go to preaching. The atten tion of the authorities is invited to these facts. The Opera House. The Streets of New York was pre sensed last night at the Opera House to a not very large audience. We were notpresent and hear "different opin ions expressed by those who were. The piece itself is probably a very fine one, as our friend who saw it in a Northern city informed us. The stage accessories are very good and the fire scene is generally con ceded to have been a thrillingly reak istic thing. The play will be pre sented again to-night. Change of Schedule. A change of schedule goes into effect on Thursday on the Carolina Central Railroad. The night train which now leaves here at 7:30- will leave then at t:4Q, and will arrive here at 8:40. The new truck was taken out of the house this morning and hi round ing a street corner the tongue broke. It was of course mendedat once. It Looks Like Suicide. The body of . L P. Mullen, the un i I" i . lortanaie man w,to -was Kinea at Union Depot yard on Sunday night, was enclosed in a handsome metal- lie. coffin and. was last night for- warded to his brother in Brooklyn, N. Y., by the railroad authorities: It left here on the 12:05 a. m. train. There is still a great deal of mys tery surrounding the sad affair, but the opinion that it was a ease of sui cide seems to be gaining ground. This really seems to be the only plausible theory. It was developed at the iaquest that he walked out of the shed and up the yard when his train in the shed had been point ed out to him. He carried in his hands at that time a valise and an umbrella and these were found af terwards on the ground 20 feet distant from the spot at which he was killed. It would seem that he must have carefully placed them aside before stepping in f ront of the engine to meet his fate. Had they been carried by him, when he was struck by the engine they would al most certainly have been found near the body and in all probability rushed and broken. The man was undoubtedly Grazed by liquor. NEW A DVB 1ST S EML KNTS.
