Lydia, it umy be remarked in passing, was not in the tights when the seizure was effected. Palmer's chances for election as Governor of Illinois are excellent. The railroaders are all practically united on him. The Republicans are seriouslv alarmed over the out look and the Democrats are corres pondingly jubilant. The split between Tammany and the County Democracy is widening. The former rejects a proposition from the latter to unite on Congress men and the two big organizations have fairly locked horns. Every ef fort should be made to heal this breech. Chief Justice Fullers family will be a great addition to Washington society. Of his numerous daughters three are old enough to indulge in social gayeties. They are pleasant, well-mannered girls and will be popular. There is a fourth daugh ter who is studying music in Eu rope, who hasreached the age deem ed necessary for an entrance to so ciety. She will be home this fall. He will go back to the Western part of the dis trict next week. Columbus county is always relied upon to give a big. Democratic ma jority and she never fails to respond to this expectation. The county is largely Democratic. Judge Fowle spoke there yesterday, at White ville, and made ope of his best efr forts. A gain in the Democratic majority is confidently looked for. A Slight Change. The line of march of the Demo cratic procession has been some what changed. When the proces sion reaches Third street it will ( go down Third to Market, and then up Market to Seventh and from there to the Wigwam. All living op the route are earnestly, requested to illuminate their houses and show our gallant Fowle and Gudger that they are not unappreciative of their presence. He Wouldn't ef. Two gentlemen met yesterday on North Front street. One was a Dem ocrat and the other was a Republi can. The former heard that the latter would bet on Blaine - Ave mean Harrison. He offered to wager any amount from a nickel to $5,000 that Cleveland would be elected. and was ready to go right into the bank, draw the money an.4 put it up. But he didn't because the other fellow wouldn't bet. Greybeards in Line. Wo understand that a number of the older Democrats in this city, those who voted previous to the war and who have not of late years taken an active part in political displays have signified their inteRoii to take a place tonght in the ranks ajt the Democratic parade. This is an excellent move and we hope that there will be generally a large turn out of those whose example as well as whose influence is worthy sq much to the younger generation. Baptist State Convention, This body, which meets at Greens boro on the 14th of November, ?s a very large organization of repre sentatives from the many churches and associations in the State. It always meets on Wednesday, fin riishes all the business by Saturday night, fills all the pulpits on Sunday and by Monday morning's trains all leave for their homes. The order of business is always marked out by the bofirds of the convention before its meeting; and, although much business is transacted, the four days fre all that are required. The con vention has been entertained in Shelby, Edenton, Newbern, Char lotte,. Goldsboro, Winston, War renton, Hillsbovo, Reidsville, Dur ham, Raleigh, Wilmington and Fayetteville. The Greensboro Pat riot says: "We feel assured that upon its assembling in this city next month its delegates will be the re cipients of that cordiaj hospitality so characterise0 of our good people and . that every denomination will hasten to meet their brethren and fellow workers in the service of their Maker with warm heasaiid friend ly hands." One of the dilapidated pavements on the East side of Second street, between Market and Princess, was being repaired to day. There are lots of others that need attention. Maggie Davis and Jane Smith both colored, were before the May or to-day, charged with disorderly conduct, but the case was carried on affidavit before Justice John Cowan who dismissed it at prosecu tor's costs.
