VOL XII. WILMINGTON, N. C, SATURDA Y. OCTOBER
The outlook for the Democrats at I
this time is simply brilliant. And
it grows brighter every day. A bet
of $1,000 to $750 in New York on
Thursday night found no takers.
We liave never seen a better pros
pect ahead at this stage of the can
vass in any previous presidential
election.
. - .
The Democrats in Boston sprung
a big surprise on the G. O. P. , on
Thursday. On that day Mr. Robert
M. Moses, JrM a lawyer of that city
and one of the most prominent Re
publicans In the State, formally re
nounced his allegiance to the Q.- O.
P. and came out squarely for Cleve
land and Tariff Reform.
The estimate is that the increase
in registration this year in New
York and Brooklyn over 1884 will be
about 75,000.- Cleveland's majority
in New York city in 1884 was 43,000.
With the increased registration it
will be strange if it is not 60,000 this
year. JHe ougnt to go to nariem
river with between 70,000 and80,000
majority.-
Even the Democrats in little Rhode
Island are getting "sassy." They
had a big torchlight parade at New
port the other night and fairly took
possession of the town. They fairly
painted it red. Millionaries and the
sons of millionaries marched in line
for three solid hours. Many of the
houses were- handsomely illumi
nated. : .

Capt. R. P. Paddison was in the

The Brunswick, (Ga.,) News gives
a graphic and interesting account
of the, manufacture in that city by
Messrs. Cplville .& Dexter, of the
t4Colville Patent Folding Crate."
Mr. Colville, the senior partner, was
for many years a highly esteemed
resident of this city. The crates are
made from refuse lumber and that
cheapens the cost. They are light
and durable and can be used many
times. They are easily filled and as
easily emptied and can be folded to
occupy' a very small space. Th.9
manufacturers turn 'oqfc frcun 000 to
Q0 per day and theyAcan be put on
tie market at yery low prices.
Suspension of Mr. A. Shrler.

Mr. Shrier has been a successful
merchant here for pearly twenty
years and was highly thought of in
business'clrcles. Many sincere ex

the hope is freely indulged that he
will soon be able to resume. The

cyclones, storms. &c, during the

tion and may be acted upon by all

. There is a great deal of complaint
in the different wards about regis
tering. We had several working
men to tell us yesterday that they
could not get a chance to register
because the' books were not open
when, they started to work arid were
closed before they' got off. - The

Capt. Patrick in Wilmington A Laud
able Undertaking on Hand i
papt. J. T. Patrick, Commissioner
oi Immigration, is in the city to-day
on a matter of vital interest to the
people of Wilmington. He thinks4
and not without reason, thata large
part of the travel which usually
goes to Florida from the North can
be stopped here. He is here by in
vitation of Mayor Fowler, with
whom he had a "conference; to-day,
and by invitation of Mr. Chadbourn
will go down. to Wrightsville and
the Hummocks this afternoon. He
thinks our climate suitable in ever
respect to Northern pleasure seekers
as well as to invalids, and our mor
tuary statistics show that there is no
healthier spot on the whole Atlantic
coast. - ,
This laudable undertaking meets
with the hearty approval of the
Rkvikw arul we are confident that
it will meet with the cordial and un
divided endorsement of all of our
people, for all will be benefited by
the result, from the banker down
to the bootblack. The Northern
visitors have aided in building many
fine churches in Florida and they
contribute liberally to the weekly
collections at-the churches. The
larger number of visitors are in va-
lids and have to patronize our doc
tors and druggists. The schools of
the city will he benefited, for many
families will bring their children
and send them to school. Real es
tate dealers will have a happy time.
The hotels and boarding houses
will reap a harvest, The butchers,
the bakers, the grocery men will
have to supply the provisions for
the hotels. The livery stables will
be patronized extensively. The street
railway and the Seacoast Railroad
will receive a large amount of pat
ronage, "The excursion steamers
that are now idle can count on large
profits. The saloons, the barberst
and in fact every citizen of the
place will have a show in the. pros
perity and money brought to Wil
mington. The plan formulated by Captain
Patrick is to have th, advantages of
Wilmington, as a health resort fully
written up and published in con
venient form, to be sent to every
physician in the Northern and Iew
England States. This is a splendid
way of reaching those, who spend
their winters outb, for the doctors
ip. a large measure direct the win
ter travel. Capt. 'Patrick also pro
poses to visit a number q proiui
nent towns North, and personally
meet the physicians arid secure their
influence for this and other North
Qarolina cities and towns that offer
good hotel accoininod.at ions. From
the success Capt. Patrick has here
tofore had. in this direction we are
confident, with the yellow fever
scare to keep the travel from Flor
laa Wilmington ean count on a
great number of visitors if our peo
ple will only do their part. It is
proposed to raise the means neces
sary to Jully advertise the city by
donations from those most interest

At St. James' Home last Sunday

first of a series of sermons on "Th
Life of Christ." It was very in
structive arid was listened to by a
very attentive congregation. To

second of the series, taken from the

to which the public- generally are in-1

Janaascliek Next Week,
Madam Janauschek will play here
two nights next week, oh Tuesday
night in Macbeth and on - Wednes
day nierht in Meg .Merrilles. She
has appeared already to Wilming
ton audiences and we know just
what to expect frpm her. It is use
less to attempt to pairit the lily.
The box sheet will be opened at
Heinsberger's-on Monday and there
will be a rush for seats. This is what
is said of her appearance . at the
Chestnut Street Opera House in
Philadelphia: 4
The enthusiastic reception that
was tendered Madam Janauschek
as she tottered on the stage last
evening, hideous in make up in the
tattered garb of 'Meg Merrill es"
must have been extremely gratifying
to the great tragedienne who through
the force of her talent . and genius
has won a place on the stage that
in her retirement it will be difficult
to fiUv A well 1 trained, studious,
hard working actress, bringing to
every character the full force of her
dramatio power, she has done noth
ing better than "Meg Merrilles."
She has brought to this character
the results of years of hard study
and studious observation and has
breathed into the breath of genius
until it becomes a living; breathing
flesh and blood creature ' in which
the actress is lost sight of and only
"Meg," .hideous, defiant, loving,
cringing and forgiving, is seen and
heard. It is in every sense a charac
ter that will always live in the mem
ory of those who witnessed it. The
melancholy fire of those mysterious
eyes, the low and awe-compelling
tones of that deep, rich and vibrant
voice, grand r and imperious force,
and&esture, form a noble and ideal
embodiment of lofty tragical con
ception. : K L
. Janauschek has at no time been
better supported, the company be
ing unusually well adapted to the
characters. George D. Chaplin was
admirably in acting and dialect as
"Dandy Dinmont," his drunken
scene being well bandied. A. H.
Staut was manly as "Henry Bert
ram;" Graham Crawford was effec
tive asol. Guy Mannering."Harry
Rich gave a delightful bit of charac
ter acting as "Dominie Bass."
Lionel Bland was excellent as "Gil
bert Glosson" -
The ladies of the company are not
only good actresses but very clever
yocahts, the introduced musical
numbers being vigorously rede
manded. Miss Marston Leigh was
very good as "Julia," although at
times her laovements were very
awkward Miss Catherine Lingard
proved herself a capable as well as
a very pretty actress as "Lucy.''
Miss Maggie Deane was pert and
vivacious as "Flora" and Miss Alice
Crawford admirable as Mrs. Mc
Candish. The piece was well placed
on .the stagej and will be repeated
tO-night. " ' .', .
