According to an English paper I't-Vi rrlir nlnna i - VirtT r Vwki ir paying quantities has been fouud is the Baltic Sea, and the vein extends from Western Russia to Denmark, Norway andSweden. Formerly the supply depended on tiie storms, which tore up the amber lying at the bottom of the sea and threw it on shore: but for twenty-five years past various appliances have been used for obtaining it cheaply and quickly. The most prolitable strata have been found in the vicinity of Meiuel, and there are twenty large dredging boats constantly at work day iind night for eight months in the year. Further to the west the amber is obtained by divers. Each diver has a little bag round his neck and a peculiar hook, with which he pulls up the sand, and every piece of amber that he finds is thrown into the ba?. Amber is also mined, for the stratum of green and in which it is found extends about thir ty miles inland." It is reported from .Wheeling, W. Va., that the natural gas wells about that city are showing signs of fail ing in the supply of fuel. These wells have been sunk in various parts of the country, particularly in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and Northern Illinois, and have in a very brief time almost revolution ized important industrial conditions Great manufacturing enterprises have grown up around them at the expense of other localities, as if the cheap fuel supply were inexhausti ble. The changes thus effected by the discovery of natural gas cover only a short period, but have been most important in results. If it should prove that after all the gas supply was so quickly exhaustible as would seem to be indicated by the Wheeling report,' the change back to the old conditions in the regions affected would be even more sudden and disastrous to certain localities and interests. Geology has so far told us nothing positive about the causes or the conditions of the nat. ural gas supply. . A Saf nYttMtment. It says:-; i - It is well understood, citizens of North Carolina, that money is be ing scattered broadcast over the State by the Republican managers, the Northern trusts and bondhold ers, to serve as a corruption fund with the end in view of turning lis over again to the horrors of Radical rule. Does not your blood boil at the bare suggestion? Are we to be bought by the Northern bondhold ers who are exacting huge bonuses of us daily under the operation of the Republican laws in force, and who are headed bv that very Shy lock of bondholders, Levi JP. Mor ton? Are any large proportion of our people to be induced to vote against their own interests by Radi cal gold? We trust not, but at the same time we cannot shut our eyes to the fact that this corruption fund will have a serious effect, unscrupu lously used as it will be. It must be met by the earnest efforts of all good citizens to maintain the exist ing status of economical and effi cient and creditable government. The methods we have referred to are tne methods of Morton, wno seeks to fasten on us his cheaply gotten claim of $ 30,000,000 and more based on so-called bonds, conceiv ed in fraud" indeed "and brought forth in iniquity." They are meth ods tt be opposed most strenuously by every houest citizen. They are most cnit rageous. But they must be met, ami the only way to meet them is for everv Democrat to resolve himself forthwith into a committee of one to work tor the success of the Democratic ticket and to work un- alteriuglv until the sun goes down on the sixth of November. There must be no lethanrv in the Demo cratic ranks an v where between Mur )hev and Manleo, between Virginia and South Carolina, from now until the election is decided. Every Dem ocrat must be astir or all may be ost. Democratic success is not a natter of course.
