NO 229i Buffalo Democrats are betting .100 to G0 that Qleveland will carry New York State. ; We hear very little about Califor- ura now but there is some talk of Nevada going Democratic. Nevada casts three votes. i The New York Star thinks that Cleveland's plurality in that State will more likely go over 30,000 than under it. The Republicans will have to come down to' the city with 100,000 majority and that of course they can't do. V And now the Republicans are get-1 . , . , , . m, ', worried about Ohio. They I ting , wo have heretofore neglected the State, deeming-it safe, but the Democrats ' have been on a still hunt and have j found much there to enceurage them j with hopes of success. The Repub licans seem really afraid that the State will go Democratic. It is stated on pretty good author ity that Sir Charles Tupper will succeed Lord Sackville as British Minister tottiis country. Lord Sack ville has been formally cut off from diplomatic relations with the ad ministration and will probably re turn to England in a few days. He is worth $100,000 a year and will probably be able to find consolation. ' .... .. The white man who votes for Oli ver H. Dockery should stop in .at some blacksmith shop on his way to the polls and get his face smeared over with grease and soot until it is as black as his heart and his con science. Here is a specimen, taken from the Chronicle, of his talk in Charlotte on Monday night: When his listeners, of a thousand negroes.and the beneficiary of coun ty government, were most enthused, the Colonel, in trying to prove tnac the Democratic party is the negro party, talked about two colored men being appointed road supervisors in a Democratic county, and that they worked 'nrliite men under them. Here he was interrupted by a hearty chorus of "That's right ! that's right!. The Democrats are "sassier" than ever. They are talking ot carrying Illinois, for sure. Following is a special from Chicago to yesterday's New York Sfar: The Democrats are . enthusiastic over the prospects of carrying the State, and the Republicans are so badly frightened as to beg votes for Fifer on grounds of personal favor. J. " Cx. Steever, of the Cleveland Board of Trade Club, is offering to bet that he can show live converts to Cleveland to one for Harrison in Chicago, and ten to one on the Board of Trade. ,It leaked out yesterday that "Boss" Davis had a poll made of Cook county, including Chicago, about a month ago, and found to his mortification that Cleveland had 4,000 majority. Not satisfied, the Republican leaders ordered another canvass, which showed 7,000 for Cleveland. This comes very direct, and is verified by good authority. Bets even on 'Cleveland carrying this State are more abundant than ever, and takers few. Some even bets have been, made that Palmer will have 10,000 majority. The Cleveland and Thurman Club of the Board 'of Trade now number over 1,000, including 100 grain trim mers," ninety of whom voted for Blaine. Fox has opened at No. 213 Market street with a new and select stock of mil linery and. fancy goods, to which the attention of the ladies is invited Miss Fox has made arrangements with a resident buyer in New York who will purchase for her and for ward the goods weekly to this city. The Popular Train. The train which left here yester day and Monday, and will leave to day, at G p. m., on the Seacoast R. R., has proved so popular that the management has decided to continue it for the remainder of the week. It leaves at G p. m. and returns at 8.30' leaving the Hummocks at 8 o'clock. The fare for the round trip is only 2-3 cents. " ' Cover Over the Sand. The drive over the Little Bridge road is a very pleasant one, after you get out of the city. There is nearly a half mile of sand to be tra versed before you can begin to en joy your ride. The county has held up its end of the route pretty well and have made a good road North of the bridge. Now let the city cover up the sand on this side with clay or sawdust and so make the entire drive a pleasant one. General Apathy in Onslow Complaints continue to come in of the apathy and indifference mani fested by the Democrats of Onslow county. We can't help it. We are not running the campaign outside of the Review office. We warned Mr. Whitaker of the situation, in Onslow. The county ought to be good for at least 500 Democratic majority and will give that if the peoplecan be got to the polls. Mr. Whitaker will please observe. Democratic County Ticket. The County Executive Committee, aating under authority and. instruc tions from the County Convention, have nominated the following tick et: ' For the House R. W. Hicks and John H. Davis. There are 35 com panies to be supplied and as rapidly as companies fie their bon.d.s for the oyercoats the latter will be .issued'. The Quartenuaster-General hopes to get them aU distributed bv the 10th of November, at farthest. To-iuorrow is known in the Church Calendar as the Festival of. All Saints." It is observed in commem-t oration of "all good and ho'y per sons who have died in the faith, and were distinguished for their holi ness." There will be joint services from the congregations of St. James, St. John and St. Paul at the former church, at 11 o'clock in the fore noon. ' No Cause for Alarm. It is said that a white man in this town, formerly a Democrat, has a list in his possession which is signed by 150 others of the Caucasian race, all agreeing. to vote the Republican ticket, next Tuesday. He is careful not to show thi3 list. There is no cause for alarm. We are reliably informed that the list shows the name of but one other white man besides his own. The Federal Court. The U. S. District Court cleared up its business to-day and adjourned for the term. The grand jury were discharged last night. The case of interest to-day was that of Jacob Greenewald vs the Asheville and Spartanburg Railroad, to recover $10,000 for injuries 'sustained in an accident on that road. - It was re moved to Raleigh to the Circuit Court for trial, amotion for a full bench having been made by the defendants. The" case is set for trial on Wednesday, December 5th. For the plaintiff : .1. I. Macks and Rus sell and Ricaud; for defendant: ,Sttult.au'''tinl Weill, . Schehck and Thos. Price. TUo Flora of This Section. There is a plant which the Uourists call agcratum Mcxicana. They say it was originally from Mexico. It is a very pretty blossom, its clusters being massed in large bunches. It is found in two colors, blue and white. This Mexican plant is a na tive of North Carolina and the woods around Wilmington are now full of it. Only the white is found here but we have found the blue in profusion on the banks of the Roan oke river. In a short drive yester day we gathered a large quantity of it. Botanists have said that the flora of this section is in great variety and very tine. It is the finest we have ever found-in our limited ob servation. Florida is called the "Land of "Flowers" and yet there are more wood flowers in one square mile around Wilmington than in all of the State of Florida that we have trayessed. Our woods are alive with bloom and beauty from the early spring, heralded by the arbutus, the violet, blue and white, flowering moss (peculiarto this -section) and the sweet yellow jessa mine, to the ageratutn and the wild artichoke, which are generally the last to succumb to th,e approach of the Winter , Kally in the First Ward. There will be a Democratic yy,Uy to-night in the First W&vd. The meeting will be addressed by C. B. Aycaek, Esq., Elector for the Third District, Eugene S. Martin, Esq., and Col. B. R. Moore, . The Young Men's. Democratic Club vwill escort the speakers to the place where the meeting will be held, on Fourth street, between Bla den and Harnett, The ever staunch and true Democ racy of the First Ward will turn out in full force and cordially invite their fellow Democrats in other wardsto join them. Chief Marshal Morrison has an nounced the following programme for the. parade: All m,.,,!, r,f fh. .... ....u .c V4 i,.. v cei red. Johnson, colored, charged with illegal registration in the Ward, was before the Mayor this morning. The chanre is that he has been disqualified, as he has been an inmate of the County House of Cor rection. He claims thathe was sent there for slander and it is said that he escaped. The case was contin" ued for a fuller investigation. Memorial Services. In accordance with the proclama tion of M. W. Grand Sire, I. O, O.
