The deepening and widening of
the ship channel from Montreal to
Qebec, a distance of 100 miles, ha j
been in progress since 1838. .But
til
ie latest and most productive stage
of this great enterprise dates from
1867, and its result is seen in a ship
channel in the St. Lawrence of the
average width of 300 feet, with an
average depth of 27 feet. Since'
the process of deepening the chan- j a. prominent band The engage
nel from 20 to 27i feet has been in went ring.
progress, tiie ocean-going commerce
of Montreal has increased rapidly.
In 1873, 704 vessels, with a tonnage
of 412,478 tons, was its extent; in 1887
the vessels numbered 707, with a
tonnage of 870,773, shownig a hirge
increase in ocean steamers. With
large ocean steamers able to unload
at Montreal, avoiding the cost and
trouble of trans-shipment, and iueas
urably independent of the Canadian
Pacilic, the city will doubtless rapid.
ly expand in trade and population.

Last week an estimable Christian
woman, Mrs. J. Lawrence Smith, of
Louisville. Ky., gave to the South
ern Baptist Theological Seminary
$50,000 for its new library building,
to be erected on Broadway. This
liberal donation will give the new
building fund movement a long step
forward. The edifice will be the
mainone of the Seminary; the nine
ty thousand dollar building on 5th
avenue, at present used for lecture
rooms, dining rooms and dormito
ries, will be entirely devoted to dor
mitories when the Broadway front
is erected. The Seminary is pros
pering greatly. There is a steady
growth in the Broadus professorship
und; this is li jiited to $100,000. Dr.
Boyce was anxious to complete this !
as earJv as nossible and tlelaved his
trip to Europe on that account. The
other funds of the Seminary amount
to over $250,000. Lands, buildings,
notes and other items of interest
bring the total valuation to $500,000.
When the Scotch cutter Thistle
was here in the summer of 1887, antl
by reason of her record and the
lurried manner in which the Volun
teer was knocked together to meet
ier a scare took possession of some
of the American yachtsmen, they
got together and changed the con
ditions of the deed of gift whereby
the New York Yacht Club holds the
America cup. It was felt by Eng-
ishmen that an act of injustice had
been committed. The natural re
suit followed. The Englishmen de
clared that they would not compete
under such unfair conditions, aban
doned their intentiod of racing an -
nually for the cup until thev had
won it, and withdrew the challenges
which had already been sent over.
The sport had received a staggering
blow and tli is year there has been
no international race. But the New
York yachtsmen saw their mistake
and lately the little junto of the
New York Yacht Club who mauage
these things were compelled to re
cede from their position, aud to offer
some inducement to the foreigner to
go to the great expense of sending
over a yacht, and so more favorable
conditions have been arranged.
The proposal which Canada re
cently made to Australia and New
Zealand to lay an Ocean cable be
tween British Columbia and these
colonies is now renewed, and they
are asked to send delegates to Ot
tawa to consult on the question.
Important financial aid could prob
ably be relied upon from the British
Government since a wire from Brit
ish Columbia to Australia would
have obvious military advantages.
The primary purpose, however, is
commercial; and it is to be coupled
with ai: effort to divert directly to
Vancouver the Australian trade
whichnow goes by way of San Fran
cisco to and from British Columbia.
New Zealand is already connected
by submarine telegraph with Syd
ney, and the proposed line would no
doubt take in the F'jis and, per
haps, other British isles on the
route; indeed, some recent annexa
tions by Great Britain in the Pacific
look as if made with a view to a
cable. This project gave a stimulus
to one introduced into Congress last
winter for a cable between San
Erancisco and Honolulu; but that is
quite a different matter from a line
with both ends in British possess
ions and connecting colonies as vast
and important as Canada and Aus
tralia. A SAD STORY.
