Ned Thomas' San Francisco min

to-night. A good minstrel troupe
always draws well in Wilmington
and the prospects are, therefore,
that there will be a fine house to

the principal streets of the city this
forenoon and discoursed SQine truly
delightful music. There will be a
happy audience at the Opera House
to-night.
The Compress Accident.
The accident to the Wilmington
Compress is causing some trouble
and expense here. We are pleased
to learn, however, that the prompt
measures taken to repair the dam
aged and broken machinery will
soon be shown in resuming active
work. In the mean time the Cham
pion is kept on full time though un
able to supply the want of the large
number of steamers in port, some of
which are on demurrage. In a very
few days we hope to be able to re
cord the resumption of work by the
Wilmington Compress.

American History.
In opening the beautiful Decem
ber Magazine of American History
the eye rests first upon the Rem
brandt Peale portraits of George
and Martha Washington, contribu
ted by Miss Stokes, gems in their
way, superbly engraved, and of sur
passing interest now that it is so
unusual to discover unpublished
portraits of our first President. "The
Inauguration of Washington in
1789," by Mrs. Lamb, is a timely as
well as a notable paper, and con
tains much fresh information on a
subject soon to be hotly canvassed
by writers of every grade in connec
tion with the approaching celebra
tion in New York City. It is unique
ly and appropriately illustrated.
This magazine, wlnle giving to the
public a charmingly readable
"Washington -number," has not
overlooked Christmas. The second
paper is by Dr. Prosper Bender on
the "Holidays of the French Cana
dians," and it is well worthy of crit
ical attention. Following, Shirley
Carter Hughson writes of "Francis
Marion's Grave"; and Prof. E. W.
Gilliam contributes a spirited article
on "The French Colony in San Do
mingo," describing its rise and fall.
Then comes an interesting colloquial
paper on "The Declaration of Inde
pendence," by M. M. Baldwin;
"Washington "Portraits by Rem
brandt Peale," which is a brief his
tory by the editor of the elegant
frontispieces; Colonel Stone's "Trip
from New York to Niagara in 1829,"
Part III., in which he visits and
describes the falls, and the country
thereabouts with its canaP packet
accommodations; ana Moncure D.
Conway has a curious page on the
origmof the epithet, "The Father
of H is Country." Among the short
Contributions is one from Katha
