We regret very much to learn of the death of Mr. James Corbett, a well know resident of this city. which occurred this afternoon at his ; resi dence on Dock, between Seventh and Eighth streets. Jarvis also spoke and they were all-enthusiastically cheered. Campanini anil Dever. It was a delighted audience which asoembled in the Opera House last njghk No more charming musical entertaininent has ever been given jn tbig city The house was a very ja.ge onet ladies occupying seats clear to the rear on both floors. Very few had ever heard Campanini and their expectations, which were great, Tenors. Something great, noble and j grand was expected of him, and the I oTnpp.tat.inns were all realize!. But no one had ever heard, or probably heard of, Slgnorina De Vere and she proved an exquisite revelation We doubt if as pure and beautifu ha soprano as hers has ever yet been heard within the walls of the Opera I House. Her vocalization fairly took the audience by storm, ana ner ren dition of 4 'The Last Rose or Bum mer" in response to an encore, was greeted with the most enthusiastic expressions of delignt. She is a young lady of an unusually attrac tive nprsnnal annearance, besides being the possessor of a most ex quisite aud charming voice and she has a great future before her Some of these days, when she has risen to hor-cr&a.t.pst altitude ami is ac knowledged the world . over as a queen of song, many will recall the pleasant sensations they experienced j last night: ZAll kinds .of School Books and School Supplies can) be bou?" cheapest at Heinsberjrer7, . t IT : Dressed turkeys sold to-day as low as 12. cents per pound but they gen. erally, bring Jroui 15 to 18 cents. ' - ' X ago. it is not my purpub any extenuea remarKs, aim tcasi x all to mauige in auy BijeuuiauuuB to the causes of the disaster which recently overtooK tne jjemoortitiu party, but, having been recently connrinea m some opinions ou tne subject, I may be pardoned for say ing a few' words. The boldest mariner is not always the safest navigator If he miscal culates the condition and force of the Wind and tide and steers straight for the haven where he wouia oe, ree-ard to them, or how his sails are trimmed, he is apt to meet with disaster. . So it is in politics, and tne result of the late election furnishes a striK ing illustration of it.: Those who navigated the great ship Democracy tried to put her into port before the tide was full nign, ana wuen i b wind, which would soon have swelN ed all her sails, had just begun to ripple the surface of tne waters. They tnereiore urnieu anu. wcuu ashore, - but not. URon tnef tocks, thank God. She is only on a sand shoal, and when tne tiae rises sue will float again unharmed in hull or rigging and although this trip is lost, she will yet reach her destina tion. That the tiae win rise js its certain as that the snip nas strucK, and when it rises it will be to ebb no more Tariff reduction is as inevit able as it is just, and the faith of every true Democrat in it will re main unshaken until it comes.. The democracy of iNortn uaronna aomc its coming with absolute confidence, and in the meantime they do not oronose to crawl before their vie- torious adversaries or sunwn at their hands. They expect Tip fa vors at the hands of the incoming administration and could not ask them without a sacrifice oi sen re cnPftt. Thev exDect justice to be administered through Republican agencies, and with the selection oi those agencies they will not concern themselves. . I do not fear any hostile action oy Mr. Harrison towards our section of the country. The universal opinion is that he is an honest man and per sonallv incorruptible and for that very reason 1 anticipate that he will have some trouble in his own politi cal household. Indeed I am sure he will have a very warm time, and will be cordially hated, not by his South ern countrymen, but by the corrupt and aggressive elements of his own party.
