Josh Kuiered at the rostoilicc at Wilmington, N.C. as second-class mutter. Several-. Republican clubs have, been organized in New York city j since the election, but theyare very j exclusive and "high-toned," requir- j This fact very naturally raises tne Question how the wage-earning vo - ters of the city are to be kept in line by pauper labor clap-trap talk from J r 1 . ,. , . such organizations four years hence as in the election of last year, and the question excites the press to call for "an organization that does not require a dress suit and opera hat; an organization that will welcome every honest man, mechanic, or la borer; that will touch elbows with the voters; that will help to reduce the 56,000 Democratic majority in this city.'1 . 4 . Lord Sackville gives the following account of his removal from the position of minister to Washington: "I was all along ignorant of the pre cise grounds on which my removal was sought, but party exigencies overruled international comity. Tel egrams were being received to the effect that the Irish vote in New York was: slipping 'away from the Democratic ticket and that imme diate action was neeessjiry on the question of my dismissal. In order to facilitate this action, involving as it did a want of courtesy which I venture tothink is unprecedented in history, diplomatic intercourse was broken off on the 30th without an intimation to me from Mr. Bayard that the situation was in any way changed since I saw him on the 20th, when he accepted my explanation and said he bore me no ill will. The question at issue had never assumed an international character, as far as I was aware, until the moment it was decided to send me my pass ports, when all adjustment was ren dered impossible, and ah incident which concerned me personally was thus at once made the cause of seri ous complications with Her Majes ty's Government. " .; The nuniber of nominations sent to the Senate by President Cleve land since the opening of the pres entsession of Congress is now more than 325. The total number of con Urinations iuade by the Senate is 53, leaving about 275 nominations still waiting for action. All of the 53 continuations except 7are of nomi nations for promotion in the army and navy, which cannot be even re motely connected with politics. Democrats; who hear Republican Senators deny tlnit as many Federal offices as possible are to be left un filled until Mr. Harrison assujues the office of President point to these fig ures as a sufficient answer. A very large proportion of the pendingnom inations are for successors of post masters whose commissions have ex pired, and for postmasters at place8 which have by law; become Presi dential offices through their; increas ed business. Not a small number art; to succeed persons wno were A. " 1 ' nominated ' in the closing davs of President Arthur's Administration 1 . C a a umi uoimrmed as quicKiy as possi ble by the Republican Senate. Their commissions ran for four years, and they were not to be disturbed by President Cleveland. Gen. HarrL son's friends in the Senate evidently prupQse to save the incoming Presi dent as far as possible from the necessity.of removing office-holders to make room for the victorious Re publicans. The fewer Democrats in office on the 4th of March the easier it will be to make the clean sweep so confidently expected by the rank and file of the Republicans. , - '- . A. Sound Ivgal Oiiinon. E.
