He preached at the morning service and in the af ternoon catechised the children. The oratorio of Ruth is now being prepared for presentation. It will be given at the Opera House to wards the latter part of the month, and for the benefit of St. John's Church. Some of the best musical talent in the city will take part in the production. The precise date has not yet been determined on'. Tampering With, the Mails. There is a rumor afloat here af fecting the conduct of a young man who is said tojhave tampered with the mails. We withhold his name, for the present, at all events. Mr. Pars ley has declined to give any infor mat ion to the press at this time. From what we can hear we do not think that any robbery has been perpetrated. For awhile it was a very pretty j sight, but there was scarcely enough ; of it for snowballing. At this w ting. 10.;iU, there is not a vestige of it to be seen, although the house tops were white with it two hours ago. There was no freeze, which is a fortunate thing. If there had been the strawberry crop would have been seriously injured. perhaps ruin ed. The Mutual Life. The annual statement of the Mu tual Life Insurance Company of New York shows the remarkable progress made by this institution during twelve months. The record made by the Mutual eclipses its own best efforts. The new business writ ten amounted to $l 03,2 14,261. 32, an increase of .$33,756,792.95 over the new risks assumed in 1887, and a gain of $46,381,542 over the business of 1886 showing a continuous and phenomenal advance. The assetsjo the Mutual Life now aggregate $126,082,153.56, indicating a gain for the year of $7,275,301. The Com pauy has now an outstanding in surance account amounting to $482, 125,184. Its total income from all sources is reported at $26,215,932. It. paidto its members during the year for death clamts and endowments and other obligations, $14,727,550.22. Up to date the Mutual had 158,369 policies in force, showing a gain in membership for the year of 17,426, thus forming the biggest army of policy-holders in any regular life insurance company in the world The surplus fund was increased $1, 645,622.11 in 1888, and the Mutual now has $7,940,063.33 over and above every liability. Mr. M. S. Willard is the agent for the company in this city. Personal. Mr. Geo. Z. French, of Rocky Point, was in the city today. Mr. Hasel W.Burgwin, of Virginia, is on a visit to relatives in this city. Mr. Thos J. Lee, of South Wash ington, Pender county, is in the city to day. We are sorry to hear that Mr. Rob. Katz is on the sick list, but hopes that it will not prove serious. Mr. Clfas E. Russell, formerly of this city, but now of Savannah, stopped over hee to day on his way to New York. Mr. James Danforth, formerly of this city, but for the past ten years residing in Massachusetts, is here with his wife on a visit and paid us a pleasant visit to-day. We were pleased to see him and renew our former happy acquaintance. Mr. Julius Hahn, well known to our citizens as a merchant of this city a few years ago but who re moved hence to Cleveland, Ohio, is in the city today-. Death of an Octogenarian. Aunt Molly Rest-on. an old and highly esteemed "resident of this cifey, died at her homehere early yesterday morning, one was. we think, about 80 years of age. She was the mother of Robert and Wil liam Keston, two well known colored men. We knew her well during our earfjei years. The interment took pace to-day in Pine .Forest Ceme- tery. Haifa Mile of Stone Blocks. The new block pavement on North Front street, from Chestnut to the depot, is now very nearly comple ted. Operations have been sus pended, temporarily, for the want of the stone blocks. These will be here in a few days and will be at once put down. It is all done now with the exception of a small piece on the West side of the street rail way track, at the corner of Walnut street, and the small space between Red Cross street and the bridge. When this is all finished up there will be one continuous stone block pavement all of the way from Orange street to Front street depot, more than seven blocks and in distance more than half of a mile.
