Miss Arnold is described as a bran- ,ette, tall and decidedly imposing. W.hen at home Miss Arnold teaches sehool at Oxford, and has been a ready contributor to periodical lit erature. She is very proud of hey sister's fame. A party of scientific gentlemen re cently performed a series of electri cal experiments on the animals in a menagerie at Bridgeport, Conn. The baboon, the sea lion and seals, mon keys, the elephants and other ani mals were treated to doses of. tha electric current. All the animals, with the exception of the elephants, manifested an intense disgust at the experiments and fought and howled with rage. The elephanf, on the contrary, appeared to enjoy the elec tricity. Lexington, Ha., can boast of the most unique club house in the world. The young men of that town built a log hut, which they chinked with clay, making it as snug ana tignt as a palace. At one end is a primitive chimney with an enormous open fireplace. The club, which embraces the best young men, has a weekly supper. The day before the supper a huge wood fire is built in the fireplace, and in the evening there is a, bed of coals and ashes that a king might .envy. The birds, fish, 'possum and oysters are cooked in the glowing ashes. and some wonderful tid bits they turn out. The Baltimore City Council has tied itself in a hard knot. At Raleigh there was 5 inches, at Char lotte 5 and at Shelby 6. It was the hardest snow we have had here in ten years. It ceased about 6 o'clock and rain then began to fall. Had the snow fallen on a frozen earth there would probably have been four or five inches of it here. We found it on a level nearly two inches d,eep, This morning there was not a trace of it left; not even snowy slush. It had all gone and the rain had taken its place. Stealing a Bag of Coffee. Yesterdav afternoon Mr. F. Le nair, of Bladen county, who had been down street shopping, drove into the cart-house on the corner of Fourth and Swann streets, where he was going to stop with his team for the night, and while he was in the back part of the house eating supper a colored bay, by the name of Alfred Jones, slipped in and stole a bag, containing 20 pounds of cof fee, from his cart, but before he could make his escape Mr. Betten court, the keeper of the cart-hquset caught "him. .lone was tried before Mayor Fowler this morning and bound over to the next term of the Crimi nal Court in the sum of a $100 justi fied bond, failing in which he was committed to jail. After half an hour's devotional exercises, conducted by Rev. Dr. T. H. Pritchard, Rev. W. S. Creasy de livered an address of welcome, which was responded to by Rev. W. McC. Miller, on behalf of the delegates. ; A temporary organization was then effected by calling Mr. Geo. Chad- j bourn to the eihair and requesting ; Mr. J. S. Mitchell to a4t as Seere- j tary. The committee appointed some j time since to prepare a constitution presented one. which was read, and after a few alterations adopted. The Committee on Nominations reported the tollowing officers, who were unanimously elected to serve for one year: President Geo. Chadbourn. Vice President Jas. F. Post, Jr. Secretary and Treasurer Joseph S. Mitchell. Executive Committee Chas. H. Robinson, chairman; Jas. W. King, Joseph W. Taylor, W. H. Strauss, E. Hewlett, Dr. Thomas F. Wood. W. F. Williams, W. H. Sprunt, Jas. M. McGowan. On account of the small attend ance Rev. F. D. Swindell was re quested to postpone his address on the 'Importance df Sunday School Work"' till the morning session. On motion the convention ad journed to meet this morning at 10 o'clock. There was an increased attend ance at this morning's session of this body, which was held at Grace M.a E. Church at 10:30 o'clock. The first half hour of the session was occu pied in devotional exercises, con ducted by Rev. P. H. Hoge. The following Superintendents submitted reports for the past year: J. W. King, Grace M. E. Church Sunday School; C. H. Robinson, First Presbyterian Church Sunday School; J. S. Mitchell, First Baptist Church Sunday School; Jas. M. Mc Gowan, Fifth Street Methodist Church Sunday School; W. H. Sprunt, St. Andrew's. Church Sun day School; SamueJ Northrop, Pres byterian Mission Sunday School. and Joseph W. Taylor, Brooklyn Baptist Sunday School, Superintendents W. H. Strauss and J. G. Dar den of the Lutheran and Bladen Street M. E. Sunday Schools being absent, Rev. F. W. E. Peschau and Rev. T. P. Ricaud, reported in their stead. These reports, embracing as they did the statistics of the various Sunday Schools for the past year, and stating the difficulties met with in the work, and the encouragement received, were exceedingly interest ing and highly edifying. Reports were also made of plans used iq the conduct of some of the Sunday Schools which proves the fact that our schools, as a rule, used the latest and best aids to insure sflccess in the work. Rev. R. C. Beaman then addressed the convention in a prac tical earnest, manner, urging upon Christians the necessity of action in this direction. 1 Rey. F. D. SwindeH, who was to have spoken last evening upon the "Importance of the Sunday School Work,'1 then made a stirring address upon this theme, after which, the Benediction was pronounced by Rev. Dr. Pritchard and a recess taken till 3 o'clock this afternoon. Thfs afternoon, the convention assembling at 3 o'clock. Rev. G. M. Tolson will speak on "The Teacher's Work and How to do it," and Rev. F. V. E. Peschau on "What has been accomplished by Sunday Schools." At 8 o'clock this evening, after devotional exercises, conducted by Rev. T. P. Ricaud, the following subjects will be discussed: "Rela tion of the Parent to the Sunday School,' by Rev. T. H. Pritchard, D. D.; "Relation of the Sunday School to the Church," by Rev. P. H. Hose.
