WILMINGTON, N. C FRIDAY. MARCH 22,
State Convention of the Y. M. C. A.
The 13th annual session of the
' Young Men's Christian Association
convened in theFirst Baptist Church
in this city at 8 o'clock last night.
There was a preliminary Bible
reading at the rooms of the Associ
ation, at 3:30 o'clock in the after
noon, conducted by Mr. S. M. Say
ford, of Massachusetts, a distin
guished lawyer and a member of the
organization.
The church Vast night was filled to
I18 "tmost capacity. The young
people especially were out m strong
force.
The meeting was called to order
by Dr. Thos. F. Wood and the ser
vices were inaugurated by singing
No. 135, of the Gospel Hymn. The
scriptures were then read by Rev.
F. W. B. Peschau. Pastor of St,
Paul's E. L. Church. This was fol
lowed by prayer by Rev. J. W. Prim,
rose, of St. Andrew's Presbyterian
Church, and the prayerby Gospel
Hymn No. 145.
Rev. Dr. Pritchard, of the Firs
Baptist Church, then delievered tbe
address of welcome. lie eloquently
and cordially bade the deregates
welcome to Wilmington and then
spoke of the origin of the Associa
tion, giving a brief review of its
growth and dwelt forcibly and
feelingly on the great good it is ac
complishing all over the civilized
world.
Mi W. G. Burkhead. of Raleigh,
was then called to the chair and on
him devolved the duty of replying
to the address of welcome, Which he
did briefly but handsomely.
Rev. Thomas Hume;D. D., Chair
man of the State Executive Com
mittee of the Y. AT. C. A., was then
introduced. He presented Mr. S.
M. Sayford as the speaker of the
evening.
Wo cannot follow Mr. Sayford'
address in full. It was a perfect
gem and no synopsis could possibly
give an idea of its interest, force and
beauty: He took his hearers with
him on an imaginary journey around
the world, visiting all of the princi
pal cities in this country where the
Association has been established
and then crossing, the water carried
them with him to the countries of
the old world, to China, Japan, the
Sandwich Islands, and even Africa
and Asia, as well as Europe,
describing the labors of the Asso
ciation and the immense power for
good it has exerted wherever it hns
gained a foothold. The address was
one of the most beautiful things
ever heard in Wilmington and it was
followed throughout with breath
less interest by the immense con
course.
At the conclusion of Mr. Sayford's
address, the chairman annonnced
the following as a Committee on
Permanent Organization, who re
ported this morning:
E. S. Tennent, Wilmington; J. B.
Whitaker, Durham; R. T. nVyche,
Oak Ridge: J. R. Young, Henderson;
Wm. Black, Maxtori ; Win, Fife,Fay
etteville; W. B. Henderson, Biug
hams; G. T. Adams, Trinity College:
W. M. Curtis, Chapel Hill.
The congregation then sang the
long metre doxology, after which
Rev. Dr. Pritchard pronounced the
benediction and the vast audience
dispersed to their homes.
SECOND DAY.
The singing of a couple of Gospel
Hymns began the exercises of tli
day, after which there were Bible
readings by Mr. Wm. Black, of Max
ton. The committee on permanent or
ganization then made the following
report, which was adopted:
President Prof. W. A. Blair, of
Winston.
Vice Presidents Prof. M. H. Hall,
of Oak Ridge, and Messrs. D. G.
Worth, of Wilmington, and W. S
Pryor. of Fayetteville
Secretaries Messrs. J. B. Whita
