C, and of de livering an address to the Inights of Pvthias at Greensboro. "Gales' North Carolina Almanack." Mr. Alex. H. Merritt, of Waycross, Sampson county, called into see us to-day and exhibited to us a copy of a venerable and valuable relic of the past, "Gales' North Carolina Almanack, for the year of our Lord 1821." We have examined it with much interest. It was printed by J. Gales, Raleigh, and the calcula tions were uiade by John Beasley, astronomer. That was the 45th year of America Independence. The names of the ' Members of Assembly for 120''are given. NewBIanover was represented by George Fennell In the Senate and John Walker and Abel Morgan in the House and Wilming ton by John D. Jones. The Senator was, we think, the late Rev. George Fennell, uncle of Mr. Owen Fennell, of this citv, and the Commoner the late Maj. John Walker, father of Mr. J. Alvers Walker and Mrs. W. H. C. Whiting. The times of hold- ing the various courts is given,. The U. S. Circuit Court held in Ral eigh twice each year, by Chief Jus tice Marshall and Judge Potter. The Clerk of the District Court held here was C. Walker. John Branch was Governor, William Hill, Secre tary of State, John Hay wood, Treas urer, and Samuel Goodwin Comp troller. James Monroe was at the time President of the United States, Daniel D. Tompkins, Vice President, John Quincy Adams, Secretary of State, and John C. Calhoun, Secre tary of War. There are several coincidences between that j'ear and this which it is interesting to note. The days of the week, according ta dates, ran very nearly with those of this week. For instance, March 36th, in 1821, was on Monday and . , m 1 I tnis year 11 is on 1 uesuay .ana faster Sunday, which fell on April 23d in 1881 falls this year one day earlier, on April 81st, The Board of Directors of the; Wilmington & Weldon Railroad Company have authorized the pay- I nient of three and a hah per cent. that the earnings of the Wilming ton, Columbia & Augusta Railroad for January, 1889, are $12,881.68 more than for January, 1888, and of the Northeastern Railroad $li!232776 more than for the same month last vear. Some few of the delegates to the Convention of the Y. M. C. A. still remain with us they say they can not tear themselves away but they are not many. In every way was the convention a grtnd success, socially as well as religiously. The delegates were a handsome body of men the handsomest, we think, we have ever seen assembled together and as they are impressionable, as all young men are, and made many pleasant acquaintances here, we think that some of them will need the benefit of the sea air before the Summer is far advanced and tha they will come here to seek it. What the ultimate result may be time alone will show. 1 Artistic Japan. This is the title of a new monthly publication, the first issue of which is now before us.
