It consists of a bulletin board, upon which are pasted each day clippings of important home a id foreign news taken from the newspaper?. Special attention is iriven to matters hrought up in con- nection with the study of history or ireograph y. Th pupils, take a great interest in the "bulletin1 ami vie with one another in bringing the greatest number of items which are suitable to be pasted. Gov. Hill regains in his service at Albany the servants employed by Gov. Cleveland. The housekeeper, Mrs. Eggleston, was recommended to Gov. Hill by his predecessor, and her retention led to the retention of her subordinates. Homer E. Bishop is the Governor's stevvatd. Bishop is a black Republican, both in com plexion and in theory, but he is de voted to the domestic comfort of David B. Hill. As the Governor keeps no horses, always' walking to the Capitol, there is no coachman in his establishment. A cook, a ehaiib berinaid and a laundress are itupor taut features of the menage. Gov. Hill is somewhat exacting as re gards the affairs of his household, and his servants are obliged to be capable and energetic. - - There are indications of a lively contest for the promotions in the United States army eonsequent on the retirement of Adjt. Gen. Drum on May 28th. The three officers mentioned as likely to succeed him are Cols. John C. Kelton, William D. Whipple and Chauncey MeKeev er. All of these oflicers have honor able war records, and they have all served with credit in the Quarter master's department. Col. Kelton, however, as the ranking colonel of the corps, is considered most likely to secure the coveted position. He is a thoroughly efficient officer, and his selection would be very popular with the officers of the army. There are numerous candidates for the Mayorship tliat will be vacated by the promotions consequent on Gen. Drum's retirement, and four of these candidates are from other staff corps. They are Capts. S. E. Blunt, D. M. Taylor and Frank Baker, of the ordnance department, and Capt. Eric Berglaud, of the engineer corps. - Taking all the circumstances to gether, nothing much less credita ble has been done in the way of mal treating foreign authors than Wil liam Gillette's turning "Robert Els mere'1 into a play. Any man -with a decent respect for another's ritrhts, to say nothing of his own self respect, would have abandoned the notion of dramatizing this novel after Mrs. Ward's earnest protest. But Mr. Gillette has done it,and has tried his work on the people of the Connecticut cities of Bridgeport and New Haven. Of course the play is not the novl. The religious ele ment is still a principal motive, but the love story of Robert and Cathe rine is made prominent, and results in Catherine's surrendering all her beliefs in order to save Elsmere's life, and they a-e to go on a trip to Algiers to accomplish his recovery. Grey 1 e not appear, though he is alluded to. the Squire is altogether eliminated, ami Langham becomes a noble, eneigetie person, who mar ries Rose instead of jilting her. Plaxman, who in the novel becomes R ise's husband, is' in the play a London dude who furnishes food for 1 1 tighter; Wynnstny is a horsey gentleman and Lady Charlotte a sft. angelic creature; and the as cetic clergyman Newcome is trans formed into something like a villain Langham's skepticism and nobility offset Xewconie's churchliness and meanness, and the Church of Eng land comes off much worse than in the story, being made rather ridicu Ions. Whether the play has any elements of success or not can hard ly be told. Mr. Gillette, witnessed the performance at New Haven, which is described as excellent, and took notes for its improvement. He told a reporter that he "only wrote a small part of it." Have You a Conglt Attend to it in time do not neg lect it for it may become serious and end in Consumption.
