Yesterday.
Yesterday is dead
And lies at rest.
No breathing stirs
The white -.robed breast;
Tho groans and nobbing
Are hushed at last.
Thauks be to Heaven!
Such pains are pftst.
Seek not to ronBo
Its unquiet ghost;
Conjure no phantom
Of what is lost;
Dome away softly,
And make no moan,
Leaving thy perished hope
Teal and alone.

John Wanamaker, the Postmaster-General,
has issued a proclama

our business men. Here is what he
says: "I would not give an adver

If I wanted to sell cheap jewelry or
run a lottery scheme I might use
posters, but I wouldn't insult a de

Advice to Mothers.
Mrs. Winslow s soothing Syrup
should always be used when children
are cutting teeth. It relieves the lit
tle sufferer at once; it produces nat
ural, quiet sleep by relieving the
cnild from pain, and the little cher

is very pleasant to taste. It soothes
the child, softens the gums, allays
all pain, relieves wind, regulates the
bowels, and is the best known reme

CHEATHAM CAUGHT THEM.
A tjueer Story of North Carolina Election
Methods.
The election of Cheatham (colored)
over Simmons (white) to Congress
from Eastern North Carolina was
brought about in a very funny
manner, and was practically settled
in half an honr. Opposite Newbern
is the town called James City. It is
settled entirely by the blacks, and
Simmons knew he had to get this
solid vote to be re -elected.
His friends went over and called n
public meeting, and stated what Mr.
Simmons had done for the district
and the colored people, and as he
real IV had proved himself a benefac
tor trie colored electors were ready
to go for him to a man. The talk
was all for Simmons, and Cheatham
was repudiated and insulted. No
one thought he had tip ghost of a
show, but he was biding his time.
The night before election Mr. Cheat
ham himseit appeared at a called
meeting in James City. The crowd
opposed his speaking, and one of the
leaders inquired:
"Didn Mars' Simmons git dat
'propriation fur de new Pos' Offis?1'
"Yes, he did."
"Didn't he git dat 'propriation fur
a stone road to the soldiers' eeme
tery?"
"Yes, he did.'
"Didn't he git that 'propriation to
build a new revenue cutter for dis
yere deestrict?"
"Yes, he did."
"Well, then what- vei' talkiu
'bout? What's de matter of Mars
Simmons?" t
"Dat's jist the trouble gem'leti,' re
plied Mr. Cheatham, as he got his
opening. Mars' Simmons got too
much influence. Me goes down ar
to Washington, an' says: 'Missur

The alarm spread like wild fire,
and the more it was talked the more
it was believed, and the next day
