It is done in other cities and always found a great con venience to the public. Newspaperial. We have received the "Fourth Anniversary Issue" of the Golds boro Dally Argus and it is a model of neatness and taste in its make up and typography. It is a 24 column sheet, the outside pages of which are printed on tinted paper and em bellished with several illustrations representing some of the most prom inent thoroughfares and public buildings in Ooldsboro. The read ing matter is appropriate to the oc casion, and is characteristic of the well directed energy and tireless work of Bro. Robinson, whose sa gacity and perseverance have es tablished a paper of which he may well feel proud and which is emin ently deserving a most liberal pat-ronge. 0 A I I i 1 WILMINGTON, N, C BOARD OF ALDKRMKN. Adjourned Meeting. The Board of Aldermen met in adjourned session yesterday even ing. All the members were present, Mayor Fowler presiding. A report from the Chief of the Fire Department was read, showing condition of the fire engines, trucks, hose reels and other apparatus of the Department, and making re commendations for the purchase of additional fire hose.that a fire alarm bell be placed at Fifth street mar ket house, and for ten additional fire hydrants and ten additional fire alarms. Referred to Committee on Fire Department. Alderman Post said that the hose of the Little Columbia Hose Reel Company was worthless: that the company was composed entirely of boys who were often in the way of the other fire companies, and he moved that the hose be brought to the City Hall and the company dis banded. Alderman Pearsall suggested that as the company was a volunteer one as a matter of courtesy they should first receive some notification of the proposed action. Alderman Morton thought it a little hasty to disband the company without notice, and Alderman Lane also favored post ponement of fiction until the j com pany was notified. Alderman Smith submitted as a substitute for the motion of Alder man Post, that the Chief of the Fire Department be instructed to make examination and condemn all hose found to be worthless and cause it to be sent to the City Hall. This was adopted, wifhout discus-, sion. Petition from property owners, asking for a fire alarm bell at Seventh and Church streets, was re ferred to the Fire Committee. Contracts were awarded as fol lows: For feeding prisoners, to William Sheehan, at Ih cents a meal. For Printing, to S. G. Hall, at $63. For electric lighting, to the North Carolina Power Company, for 51 electric lights at $10.50 each per month. For gas lights, to the Wilmington Gas Light Company. For lumber, to Parsley & Wiggins at $10.50 per thousand feet, for mer chantable stuff, and $13.00 for all heart lumber. For feeding mules, etc., to T. J. Southerland. at $29.75 for each team. The Finance Committee through Alderman Hicks, recommended ac ceptance of bid of G. H. Green and E. F. Johnson for tax listing at their bid of $475. Alderman Lane offered as a sub stitute that the contract be award ed to Col. Jas. G. Burr, and Alder man Smith, while he disliked to oppose the recommendation of the committee, also favored the award being made to Col. Burr. Consid eration of the matter was finally postponed until the next regular meeting on motion of Alderman Craft. ' The Mayor announced the ap pointment of Aldermen Pearsall, Morton and Hicks as the committee on Permanent Street Improvements. Petition of Wilmington Light In fantry for an appropriation of $750 for the current year was referred without debate to the Committee on Finance The Mayor said that he heartily approved of every encour agement being given to the com pany, and spoke of its value to the city as one of its greatest safe guards. Alderman Lane asked for the re port of the City Attorney in the matter of suits for delinquent taxes. The matter was discussed at length. The Mayor said the cost would amount to $2,300. . Alderman Hicks had been dispos ed to submit to a non suit, but after consideration he favored taking a different course, and suggested that two or three cases be tried at the approaching session of the Supe rior Court and let these decide the rest. The City Attorney explained that the 'calendar had been complet ed and suits could not be entered at this term of court. Alderman Pearsall, also, thought if would be a bad precedent to es tablish to non suit these cases and release those who had refused to pay taxes. Finally, on motion of Alderman R WEDNESDAY, APRIL Smith, it was decided to postpone ac tion until the next regular meeting of the Board, and there being no j other business for consideration the meeting adjourned. Nor barqne Qvos, Olsen, cleared to day for New Castle, with 4,575 barrels rosin, valued at $4,382.26, shipped by Messrs. E. G. Barker & Co. Hon. C. W. McClammy, represent! ative in Congress from the Third District, arrived in the city last night. The foundation for the new gov- ; eminent building has now reached I the top of the ground and quite a number of the ventilators have been placed in position. Work on the structure is progressing favorably. This is delightful weather in which to ramble in the forests which I surround our city and inhale the I balsamic odors of the pine and the exquisite fragrance of the innum erable flowers which bloom in pro fusion on everv side. A white man was found at the foot of Dock street this morning so drunk that he could not navigate and he was loaded on a dray and taken to the guard house where he will have a chance to sleep off the effects of his debauch, besides prob ably having a splendid opportunity of being a prominent figure at the Mayor s Levee to morrow morning. For the Navy. There will be a competitive exam ination, to be held at Warsaw on the 1st of May, for the naval cadetship to which the Third Congressional District is due. To the boys of the glorious Third District, we would say in the language of Capt. Cuttle. '"Study up your Bowditch's Naviga tor, and when found make a note of it.1 , City Court. The proceedings before this tri bunal to day were not of great im portance, as the following will show: Amos Talley, A. Bryant and Rich ard Foster, all colored, were charged with gambling, but the hearing was postponed untd to morrow. Thos. Payne, a colored youth charged with disorderly conduct, thought that he could not get jus tioe in the City Court, and the hear ing in his case was transferred to Mr. J. Cowan, J. P., by whom judg ment was suspended upon payment of the costs. More Fire Alarm Boxes. The officers of the different fire companies of the city have submit ted to the Board of Aldermen, through the Chief of the Fire De partment, recommendations for sev eral additional fire alarm boxes, to be placed as follows: Third and Red Cross, Chesnut and Water, Fourth and Mulberry, Fifth and Nixon, Sixth and Princess, Seventh and Nun, Hanover and McRae, Eighth and Orange, Fifth and Ches nut, and Twelfth and Market. They also recommend that hydrants be placed at Twelfth and Market, Eighth and Chesnut, lIlcRae and Hanover, Anderson and Rankin, Seventh and Swann, Fifth and Nix on, Fourth, between Nixon and Swann, Sixth and Castle, Third and Queen, Sixth and Wooster and Fifth and Queen streets. . i A Real Improvement. In the improvements which are now being made on Market street an entirely new and pleasant fea tue was developed to day. Com mencing in the center, of the street, at a point 50 feet East of Front street, the workmen began placing a curbing, elliptical at the end and enclosing a space 18 feet wide and extending to within 50 feet of Sec ond street, with the exception of about six feet for the crossing which is now nearly opposite 116 Market street, but which is to be moved j about 35 feet further East. This plot will be turfed over and will be the curbing, which will be raise five inehes above the pavement ex- j cept at the crossing where ifcwill be on a level with the street. To add ( to the beauty of the street four trees will be set out in this grass plot which will be equi-distant from each other and also from the ends of the curbing. It will, when completed, j add materially to the attractiveness , of the street, which is sufficiently wide to. cause no inconvenience to travel. , vi i : w 10, 1889. NO 86. NEW ADVERTISEMENTS.
