A. Yates, D. D., writes us as follows from Durham: "I don't know what I am due the Review, but I send $4 at a risk for the current year. I think the paper im proves all the time. I wish you much prosperity." These certainly are good words and kind words and would cheer and encourage any man's heart. We are very proud of the commendation of such a man as Dr. Yates. We have published whaty he said without his permission but we are sure that he will appreciate the motive and pardon us for so do. The Sick Horses. The question which is now agi tat ing horse owners and horse deal ersjiereabotits at this time is this: Is the disease which has appeared here the glanders ? Some assert positively that it is an others are equally positive that it is not. A expert from Washington City will be here on Monday and then the matter will be decided. In the meantime a horsepital has been fit ted uo at Mt. Tirzah, a few miles below the city, and all sick and sus pected horses are being isolated and cared for there. So far as we can ascertain no new cases have devel oped to day and those that have become affected are generally im proving. Destructive Forest Fires. Large forest fires have been raging for days past along the line of the C. C. R. R. On Tuesday they nearly caught the East bound day train. The woods were on fire on both sides of the track and the engineer determined to make a break for it. He could not see a rod ahead and he just opened the valve and let her go. He ran a mile in a minute. The heat was intense and both the en gineer and the conductor had their hands and faces blistered. Yesterday the fire took hold of the track two miles West of Hamlet and burned over some 500 feet of it. It has all been replaced, however, and the trains will hereafter run with their usual regularity. Fires have also raged over the line of the R. & A. A Ivtne, but some of the tele graph poles have been burnt and the wires laid low and we cannot learn anything from there. The Creosote. Case. It is evident that there is to be a big fight in this matter, and a very stubborn one. A bill has been filed in the United States Circuit Court, at' Raleigh, and the News and Obser ver say 8: A bill in equity has just been filed in the office of the Clerk of tlm Uni ted States Court here by William Mahone, .Warner Millerf John P. Jones and George West against the Carolina Oil and Creosote Company and W. P. Canaday, Sergeant at Arms of the U. S. Senate, and others connected with it. The complain ants claim that some time ago Mr. Canaday, who was president of the company, resigned and arranged to have himself succeeded by Mr. AA. Thomas, of Washington, and that Mr. Thomas was elected at a meet ing at which there was a bare ma jority pf the directors present, and which, was held without the knowl edge of the coraplaintants, who are themselves stockholders and direc tors of the company. They state that they do not recognize the resigj ' nation of Mr. Canaday or the elec tion of Mr. Thomas that the pro eeeding was not according to the provisions of the by-laws of the company and not legal. Among other things the bill sets forth that a resolution was passed by the direct ors at the said meeting that the new president Thomas be empowered to fssue a certificate for 781 shares of stock to be held by him as security or by such persons as he might ar range with for the loan of $20,000, which transaction they claim would have proved detrimental to the"busi ness. They pray that a full meeting of the dire'etors of the company be ordered that Canaday may be re moved from the presidency of the company, and a successor duly elqct ed. They also pray for an injunc tion restraining the issuing of the 781 shares of stock as provided in the resolution passed. A restraining or der has been granted by the count and the motion for an injunction and the appointment of a receiver for the company as prayed for in the bill has been set for hearing on May 7th. The bill makes several specific and direct charges of fraud and interesting developments are expected. The subject for the Gospel meet ing in the Young Men's Christian Association rooms to morrow after noon at 5:30 o'clock will be "The 'Comes1 of the Bible."' AH men in vited. Mr. W. M. Camming will: lead. . I NEW ADVERTISEMENTS. Is the time to have your old I am in this line of business. W. - i. Prompt Payment of a 85,000 Claim. We call the attention of our read ers to the card which appears else where in this issue from the widow of the late Dr. Shober of this city, acknowledging the full payment of the life insurance carried by her late husband in the National Life and Maturity Association of Wash ington, D. C. Dr. Shober had been insured than t wo years, and in that time had passed from a condition of perfect health to - his death. The payment made by him hag been comparatively small, while the bene fit is large, the amount of insurance being five thousand dollars. The company has shown the same promptness in the settlement of the claim here that has characterized its dealings at all other points, and the result can but be satisfactory to the large body of policy holders which it has in Wilmington The payment was made by Mr. Easterday, the Assistant Secretary of the Company and Mr. Gibson, the special agent. They will remain in the city several days, and those of our citizens who need life insurance cannot do better than to improve the opportunity to take it in this staunch Washington Company. The Best Yet. Here is decidedly the best thing in the way of epitaphs that has come under our observation. It was cop ied for us from a tombstone in a churchyard in Cheraw by a gentle man who was there a few days ago My name, my. country, what are they to tnee? What, whether high or low, my ped igree? Perhaps I far surpassed all other men, Perhaps I fell below them all, what then? Suffice it, stranger, that thou seest a Tomb. Thou 'know'st its use, it hides no matter whom. A Letter from Dr. Hans Von I? alow. The Knabe Pianos, which I did not know before, have been chosen for my present Concert tour in the United States by my Impressario and accepted by me on the recom mendation of my friend, Bechstein, acquainted with their merits. Had I known these pianos as now I do, I would have chosen them by myself, as their sound and touch are more sympathetic to my ears and hands than all others of the country. Dr. Hans Von Bulow. New York, April 6, 1889. To Messrs. Wm. Knabe, & Co. Personal. We are glad to note that Dr. James E. Kea, who has been quite sick for some weeks past, has so far recovered as to appear on the streets again. Mr. David S. Cowan, special agent of the Treasury Department, has resigned his position. There are just 38 hungry Rads, it is said, who are clamoring for the place. We were pleased to receive a , call to day from Mr. Geo. J. Easterday, Assistant Secretary of the Nationa 1 Life and Maturity Association of Washington City, who is herein the interests of his Company. He will remain here several days. Prof E. A. Dr. 8ho' ber had been insured with you at the time ef his death less than two years and the prompt payment of this sum by your company snows the value of life Insurance and the fact that even those who seem at the time to be in the best of health may be the nrst ones whose claim will be made against a company.
