The palm branches was conspic uous features in the adornment yesterday of the Roman Catholic, Episcopal and Lutheran Churches. The decorations at St. John's were especial ly lavish and handsome. The very beautiful palms used there were ordered from Florida, especially for this purpose, by Mr. H. G. Small bones. The altar, choir and nave were all tastefull v. decorated. Let ns Give Thanks. On the 30th day of April, 1789, at 9 o'clock in the morning, divine ser vice was held in every church throughout the land and we trust that the same thing may be done, at the same hour, on the same day, Ln 1889. It is the intention, we un derstand, of some of the churches here to hold this service and we hope that it may be done in all of them. And not only this, but we hope also that in every church there will be large and devout congrega tions and that humble and hearty thanks may be rendered to Almighty God for the fostering care and pro tection he has afforded us as a peo. pie and as a nation during the first centennial of the united indepen dence of the Sovereign States. The Bargaw and Onslow Railroad. A note Loin Mr. Geo. A. Ramsey, Vice President of the Burgaw and Onslow Railroad, conveys to us the pleasing intelligence that work is to be begun on the Burgaw and Ons low Railroad on Wednesday next. A gentleman leaves New York to night for Burgaw to locate the line We are glad to hear this and hope the enterprise may be pushed for ward to a successful completion. We know something of the country through which this road is to pass and there is not a fairer or more productive section in East Carolina. It needs development sorely and once it is opened up by rail it will be rapidly filled with settlers. There will not be much grading to be done in that country no cuts and no fills of any consequence. Four water courses must be passed, however, Burgaw Creek, North East river, and Shelter and Shaking Creeks. The former will require a long, but lorw trestle, while Shelter and Shaking are narrow streams with high banks on either side. The most serious job in this line will be the bridge across the river. A Blessing in Disguise. This is the 40th anniversary of the biggest snow storm on record in this section. It was on Sunday. April 15th, 1849, that this snow fell. The previous day,Saturday, was a bright, mild, Sprirjg like day. The snow, strange as it may appear, was a great blessing to the people of this section. It thawed rapidly and did not work any material injury to vegetation, which was not at that time as far advanced as it is this Spring. It killed all of the young trees, how ever, of the kind such as hpoppoles are made of, such as dogwood, hick ory and birch, and hooppoles were as a consequence scarce that year. But it did more than this and there in worked a great blessing. For several years previous the tur pentine trees in various sectionshad been dying out rapidly. Investiga. tion showed that they were killed by a small bug, or worm, which bored its way into the tree and absorbed the sap. Thousands upon thousands of fine turpentine trees had been in this way destroyed and no one knew how to prevent the ravages or the pestilent bug. Only the long leaf yellow pine was at tacked. The snow solved this diffi culty, for it killed the bugs which had killed the trees. They disap peared and have not been seen or heard of since. The Alarm Last Kveni ug. There was an alarm of fire about 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon which, fortunately, did not amount to anything serious. It was caused by the burning out of a chimney at the residence of Dr. F. W. Potter, on Market street, near Third. The wind was high and the sparks flew around at a lively rate. The depart ment turned out promptly. Dr. Potter was afraid that the chimney was foul and had tried various means, without success, to get it clear. A sweep is needed here. Personal. BishopWatson. we are glad to learn, is somewhat better but is not yet able to leave his room. We are glad to learn that Rev. W. S. Creasy, who was too sick to hold services in Grace Church yesterday, is reported as better today. Dr. K. J. Powers, 'of Pender coun ty, was in the city to day. He re ports hail in his section last Satur day night but does not think any particular damage was done. Mr. W. H. Gibson, of Washington City, Special Agent of the National Life and Maturity Association, ar rived here last Saturday night and will remain here a week or two. Drs. T. F. Wood, W. T. Ennett, W. H. J. Bellamy, Geo. G. Thomas and T. S. Burbank have gone to Elizabeth City for attendance on the State Medical Convention. Mr. James R. Nolan, the newly appointed Superintendent of the Seacoast Railroad, formally assumed1 the duties of that position to day He is an accomplished and exper ienced railroad man and the direc tors of the road are fortunate in having secured his services. Rev. Dr. Carmichael sustained a painful injury to one of his knees by tripping and falling on the steps at the Bishop's residence on Saturday last but with his usual pluck beheld all of the services yesterday in his Church, although suffering much with pain all of the time. Cards are out for the wedding of Mr. Paul W. Pope, son of Col. A. Pope, formerly of this city, but aow Traffic Manager of the Norfolk & Western R. R., to Miss Nelly, daugh ter of Mr Lawrence Lottier,of Rich mond. The marriage is to take place on Wednesday afternoon, the 24th inst. ' Palm Sunday in the Lutheran Church. Passion Week was begun in St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church by the holding of German services at 11 a. m. yesterday. A good sized congregation was present. Quite a number of the German sea captains now in port also attended the ser vices. A sermon appropriate to the day was preached by the pastor. "At the night seryice, despite the unpleasant weather, the church was filled from end to end by a large and interested assemblage of worship pers. Rev. F. W. E. Peschau, the pastor, preached a sermon on l'Con fessiner Christ." In the discourse hei delivered he spoke of the Scriptural and honored mode of uniting with the church, and of the importance of catechatical methods that had been employed, long before there were even printed books. He further spoke of the mighty influence Lu ther's catechisms, based so closely upon the Bible, have had in the world and how denomination after denomination had fallen into line by introducing a catechism of its own, and that even some denom inations, who had opposed its use, had entirely changed upon the subject, and were today using a catechism in their Sunday Schools, until now the overwhelming ma jority of all that is called Christian is in form of this aid in Bible instruc tion, and aid in leading the youth to a knowledge of D'vine truth and Divine grace and a confession of Christ, which is ever to come from the heart. The catechatical class after the j sermon gave expression to its Chris- Uan faith by quoting passages from the word of God, and from Luther's Smaller Catechism, in answer to questions propounded by the pastor, throughout which deep interest I was manuesieu in ihc wuicgauuu. The class will be confirmed on Good Friday night. Eight members were added to the church yesterday. The cautionary Northeast storm signal was ordered raised here at 10:30 o'clock yesterday morning, for this section and Morehead City. A storm was then central in Mississ ippi and moving East. This fore noon the flagstaff was bare for awhile but the Northeast signal was afterwards raised. There was con siderable wind here yesterday but no damage was done. It was ac companied by rain. The indications for to morrow are for fair weather- The Onslow People Pushing Forward. The surveying party for the Ons low R. R. crossed Capt. Souther land's race track last Saturday. We do not know the exact route but understand that it will not run far at any time from the county road. There is a curve in this latter, about 4 miles from town, where it turns gradually more to the Northeast and at this point it is probable that the railroad will run its greatest distance from the county road. It will, most likely, come up with the latter again at Macomber's store, and then the straight Northeast course will be for Scott's Hill, 12 miles from the city. There is no doubt that the projectors mean bus iness, as dirt is being thrown at Jacksonville, as well as at Scott's Hill. We hope to gather some of our own New River oysters next Fall. City Court. The Mayor had quite a large docket to dispose of this morning, which he did in the following order: M. Crooin, charged with disorder ly conduct, was found not guilty and discharged. Laura Ellerby, disorderly conduct, continued until to-morrow morning. Monroe Turner, disorderly con duct, $10 or 20 days. John Bouman, a colored lad, was charged with the larceny of a sum of money, the property of one Paul Bryant and others. This case was left open. David Sterling was charged with driving his dray on the sidewalk, He was fined $5. Win. Finney, disorderly . conduct, discharged. Grant Torrence, disorderly Con duct, discharged. NEW ADVERTISEMENT??
