It is said to be a solemn fact that
every room in every hotel in New

he has already refused 2,000 appli

Too Young to Die.
We regret very much to learn of
the death at Point Caswell, on Sat
tirday last, of Miss Kate; the oldest
daughter of Ex-Sheriff A. R. Black.
She was a charming and accomplish
ed young lady, only 22 years of age,
the joy and comfort of her father's
household and beloved by all who
knew her. We tender the bereaved
family our most sincere sympathies
in their great loss.
Doe 8 Not Cross the Track.
We were misinformed as to the line
of the Onslow Railroad passing
through Capt. Southerland's race
track. It goes near the track but
does not touch it; in fact, there is a
quarter of a mile or so between the
line and the track. It runs along
the old plank road about three miles
from town, and to its left. It then
goes down through Mr. John B.
Harriss' field and continuing to the
left of the old plank road, eomes
out about a half-mile this side of
I Capt. Macomber's store, the store
being seven miles from town. It is
said that this is not an experimental
line but the line on which the road
will be actually located.
Dead and Unknown
The dead body of an unknown
white man was found yesterday af'
ternoon in a dense thicket, about
100 yards from the Federal Point
road, near Jumping Run, much
decayed. It was discovered by
Mr. J. EL Hewitt and when found
had been plucked and mutilated
considerably by the birds. JThe body
was lying face downwards, with the
head in about three inches of water.
It was that of a man about 35 or 40
years of age. clad in a gray checked
coat and pants, with narrow light
and dark stripes, a run-down pair
of brogan shoes, and an old light
colored felt hat, which rested on the
back of the head. In the left hand
there was an old clay pipe with reed
stem, about half .full of tobacco, and
in one of the pockets of the pants a
small chunk of salt pork. This was
all that was found on or near the
body, and there was nothing that
would afford the slightest clue as to
the identity of the dead man. He
was about five feet, six or seven
inches in height, stout and well
built.'and in life would probably
weigh about 150 pounds.
No marks of violence were found
on the body and no one who saw
the remains could identify the man.
The jury rendered a verdict "that
the man, name unknown, came to
his death from causes unknown to
the jury, in a bay near J. W. King's
place in New Hanover county.'

It is! the Glanders,
We had a full report yesterdajy of
the visit here of Dr. Wray.Jof Baltis
more, the veterinary surgeon in the
employ of the U. S. Government,
who was sent here to examine the
disease which has been developed
among the horses in this city. The
article was in type and on the gal
ley but was overlooked, along with
other matter, in making up and
hence did not appear. We regret
this, as it was a good item and we
get it.
Dr. Wray found that th disease
was the genuine glanders, but hopes
hat we may be able soon to stamp
it out. It is an incurable disease,
and is dangerous alike to man and
beast to the latter, we take it, in
the way of pyaemia, or blood pois
oning, by its introduction to the
human system through abrasions of
the skin.
