The members of the two lodges of Odd Fellows in this city, Cape Fear No. 2 ami Orion No. 67, with their invited guests celebrated at Concor dia Hall last night the 70th anniver sary of the introduction of the order into America. An excellent pro- gramme had been prepared. The opened with a i ceremonies were voluntary by the choir, consisting of Messrs. C. H. Robinson, W. P. Toomer, W. N. Jacobs, E. P. Boat wright, John E. Grant, U. M. Rob inson, J. W. Fleet, Brook French and H. K. H olden. This was follow ed by prayer by the" Chaplain, M. C. Walton, and then Secretary Mc Gowan read the proclamation of the Grand Sire. There was more music by the choir and then Rev. F. W. E. Peschau, the orator of the occasion, was presented by Mr. John D. Bel lamy, Jr. Mr. Peschau's address has been pronounced one of the ablest he has ever delivered in this city. It was both historical and rethoricaL presenting a very interesting sums mary ot facts and figures and depict yag in most eloquent language the great benefits which the order has conferred'and still confersjupon man kind. His address was divided into four parts the principles of the Organization, the origin, the pre -'sent membership, and the benevo lence and influence of the order. He began his address by saying that there was good luck in odd num bers, and developed the fact that the good and right always seem to be odd. He spoke of the great amount of money the order had raised for the amelioration of the human race; this sum aggregating over fifty millions up to 1886; ami he also related many touching inci dents which happened in connec tion with the order. Mr. Peschau also showed that by authentic records it dated as far back as 1745, and that its membership was now one million one hundred and sixty four thousand eighty-one thousand more than the Masons and that it was also the second order in point of age. He then illustrated the many practical acts of benevolence and the great influence the order exercised. At the conclusion of the address Mr. W. M. Hays invited the audience to partake of a banquet which had been prepared in an adjoining room, and thither all repaired. An elegant repast was served under the super intendence of the caterer, Mr. E. P. Kiley, to which ample justice was done. At its conclusion the dance was declared in order and the enjoy ment was kept up with unabated zeal until the small hours' of the morning. g Not a Legal Holiday. It seems to be pretty generally understood that Tuesday next, the 30th inst., the centennial of the in auguration of General Washington as first President of the United States, has been made a legal holi day by proclamation of the Presi dent. This is an error. The resi - dent doesn't make laws; he merely sees that they are executed. His proclamation called upon the people to assemble at their various places of worship at 9 o'clock on that day and render thanks to Almighty God for His blessings to us as a people in times past and to implore a? con tinuance of the Divine favor for the future. . The Dance Last Night. K The young folks Mad a most de lightful time at the Soiree and German given last night by Prof. Belezza, to his classes, in Germania H at 1. The attendance was large and the weather was just cool enough to make dancing enjoyable. The Soiree came first and at half-past 9 o'clock the German was began and continued until shortly after mid night. It was a very delightfu1 affair to all who attended. I'What's In a Name"?
