The actual loss sustained by the : New York teletrranh eoiunanies j a i whose poles have been ruthlessly removed during the past week in accordance with Mayor Grant's orders is very large. Most of the fine large poles were almost new and had been recently erected. The poles alone cost $100 apiece, and the work of putting them up and string ing the w ires cost, "at least half as much again. Considering tlie loss of material and the extra work imposed on the coiupauieri, it is a small estimate to figure their pecun iary damaare at $100,000. There is much more to come, however, and j this sum is likely to be very small in comparison with the ultimate bur den put upon theui. The Washington correspondent of tlie New York Times says: "The white Republicans of the South have had a great deal ro say about the failure of Democrats to 'give the negro a show" in Southern polities, but now that a Republican Admin istration is in power some of them are not so anxious to see colored, men in office. The postmaster gen eral's daily appointments of from one hundred and fifty to t wo hun dred postmasters are beginning to take in the Southern States, and there a colored man is receiving a postmaster's commission As a result protests are beginning to come in from white Republicans, j who fear that more such appoint luents will be made They don't like to have their mail handed out by a colored man who draws a salary from the C-foverument, and in some cases they have taken the trouble to come on to Washington in person to say so. One of these protestants is C Newcoiub Clark, Ex Speaker of the Michigan House of Representa tives, but now f Ocean Springs, Miss. Col. Clarke is a good Re publican, but he is here to head off. if lie can, the proposed appointment of a negro as postmaster at Ocean Springs. He is not the only South ern Republican who thinks that making a colored man a postmaster iygiving him just a little more 'show' than is entirely agreeable or neces sarv.'' Health and Beauty. In a week I felt greatly benefitted. In three weeks I could sit up and walk about the room, and after using six bottles I was out and able to go to business.
