It is understood that this handsome donation is to be the nucleus of a fund for the founding and main tenance of a school for orphan children after the indebtedness inci dent Fo building the church shall have been removed. Mr. Davis has long cherished the idea of such a school as is proposed, and it is hoped he may be spared to see the fulllilment of his beneficent plans, The institution will be under the immediate supervision and control of Fifth Street M. The report of Dr. F. W. Potter, Superintendent of Health, for the month of April, gives the total num ber of deaths occurring in the city as twenty nine, including three still births. The showing is a very fa vorable one when compared with the record for the same month in previous years, the deaths in April,, 1888. being 36: in 1887, 43; in 1886, 43; in 1885, 37. Davis, J. T. Bar ron, B. R. Dunn, A. J. Galloway, D G. Proctor, A. M. Proctor, J. M Proctor. A Few Sanitary Remarks. The Sanitary Committee of the Aldermanic Board of the city of Wilmington have a heavy responsi bility upon their shoulders. And they will receive all praise for suc cessful efforts in placing this city in a high sanitary condition to meet the possibleattacks of disease which accumulated garbage and filth will engender when the rays of Old So' are drawn to a heavy focus. We are proud of our health condition, as shown by our mortuary reports. But because it is healthy is the very best reason why our energies should not be relaxed in this great work. 4 We have subscribed largely to rail road construction and we have advertised to capital that if such is invested here taxes will be remitted. This is right, though we must con fess that good pavements and sew erage are now claiming the attention of all right thinking people. We are slowly but surely improv ing the streets but sewerage as a practical question must needs take a back seat for the present. Every effort must be made to put the city in acleanly condition. Such a course would bring about most substantial results. Now that we have a num ber of most attractive seaside re sorts, crowds will be drawn hither to sniff the ocean breezes and enjoy the surf bathing. And the city, too, will have its quota of strangers each Summer and it is of the utmost importance that Wilmington should seek to keep her streets and hots thoroughly cleansed. Vacant lots should not be permitted to revel in noxious weeds and the streets should- evidence at a glance that the officers are tireless in the great work of preserving the health of the citizens and the strangers within our gates. If we would increase our population add to our wealth producing inter- hests, attract capital and place our city in the advancing columns of progress and thrift and lift her indi vidually as the growing commercial city of the South, we must use our best energies in the great matter jast treated of. Should the Sanitary Committee fail to come up to the requirements aud should disease get a lodgment here the coming sum mer they cannot ajjd will not escape censure. It is rather early in the day to anticipate auy dereliction of duty on the part of the c mmittee.
