Over 607,000 per sons crossed the Brooklyn bridge, 46S.00Q in the cars and 188,000 on the foot path. Six hundred and forty t - o thousand crossed the Biooklyn ferries. The elevated railroads in this city carried 765,000 persons on Monday. 825,000 on Tuesday and 756,000 on Wednesday, a total of 2,346,000 during the three days. This is about 800.000 more than what tl e ordinary travel would have been. The New York Central Railroad landed about 50,000 persons in this city, the Harlem Railroad about 40,000 and the New Haven Railroad more than 50,000. The Penns;. Ivk nia carried nearly 100.000 Centennial passengers. The Brie, the Dela ware, Lackawanna and Western and the .Jersey Central carried prob ably 150,000. and the Staten island Ferry not less than 40,000. About 7,600 people" came down on theAl bany boats and as many more on the Connecticut and Massachusetts boats. It is estimated that about 1,300.000 people visited the city dur ing the Centennial, including those from Brooklvh and the suburbs. Many of the strangers still linger in the city, but a great body of them have departed. -m Bishop Potter hasn't a word of regret for his Centennial sermon. In an interview on Friday he said: "The pulpit does not speak out as lt should. These xplntocrata are the enemies of religion, as they are of the State. And, not to mince mat ters, I will say that, while I had the politicians in mind, prominently, there arc other a. tell you, Mr. World, that 1 have heard the cor rupt use of money in elections and the sale of the sacred right of the ballot openly defended by ministers of the Gospel. Can I name names? Indeed, I can; and I may find it necessary to put such men of the sacred office in the public pillory by the side of their less-to-be-blamed professional politicians and profess ional heroes. In dead earnest? Why, 1 have had to listen to an argument intended to demonstrate that it was a citizen's right to. cast his vote on the side of his highest personal1 in terest, even though That 'interest' were one of dollars and cents. 1 shouldn't like to say that ours is a degenerate age: but 1 avow frankly that in civil and social life the tone is lower than it ought to be. I do not despair regarding our country. SHE IS GREAT! Her people are naturally imbued with love of justice to labor tman from man: we are not Grangers to the princely gem of -philanthropy or to the splendid activity of women in behalf of their own sex. The social tendencies in the great cities, out side of politics, are most inspiring, most elevating. But the spoils sys tem, and its related vice, the pur chase of votes, are things to be afraid of, to he jumped upon and strangled."'
