UntereJ at the Postoflice at Wilmington, NX'., as second-cliiss1 matter. Prof. John L. Buchanan, saperin teii'lent of puOIic sehool? in Vir jfinia, makes an encouraging j-eport of their condition. He says the records of the present year show more schools in operation and more school houses in use, more graded schools established,' more teachers employed, more pupils in attendance and more school funds expended than those of any year since thesys tern was inaugurated. The engagement of ex-Secretary Bavard and Mis Mary Willing Cly- uier, of Washington City, is just now engrossing the attention of their friends. It is not yet formally announced, but seems to be fully u iderstood by those closest to each p irty. Miss (Jlyiuer is the daughter of the late Dr. Clyiner, U. 8. N. Nhe resides with her mother in a com fortable, roomy mansion on H st reet, adjoining the residences of Judge Bancroft Davis and Mr. Txeorge Ban croft. She is wealthy, cultivated and refined. . . News has been received at the City of Mexico of a discovery of great archaeological importance in the State of Chiapas, near the ruins of Palanque, being nothing less than a large city hidden in the depths of the forest. Some buildings are five stories high and in a good state of preservation. There is a well-paved road several miles in length still perceivable in the midst of a tropi cal forest. Very few particulars have reached here, but the report comes from good sources. Palanque is said to be a mere village in com parison with this lost city of prehis toric times. A correspondent of a French pa per tiints at a very tragical use to which the Eiffel Tower in Paris may, and doubtless will, be put. In tending suicides, he says, will avail themselves of it, and make it a handy substitute for the Column Vendome, which, it will be remem bered, was largely patronized for this dread purpose of suicide. But added to this comes another reflec tion the effect of the dizzy height upon ordinarily sane people. It is well known to doctors that a great height induces an extreme form of giddiness in people, and from that to throwing themselves over is only a steD. Tb trustees of Vanderbilt Uni versity, Nashville, Tenn., have elec ted Pishop R. K. Hargrove as the ! successor of the late.Bislop H. N. . McTveire in the presidency of the board of trustees. Bishop McTyeire j was made president for life by Com modore Vanderbilt, the founder of the university, with an annual sal ary of .$3,000. Bishop Hargrove is I elected president for life without salary, but will receive $1,000 a year ;for house rent. He owns an ele gant residence in the new tjown of West Nashville. Bishop Hargrove iis a native of Alabama, is 57 years j of age, and was elected Bishop at the General Conference which met in Nashville in 18S3 Prtoii to his being made Bishop he hal been president of Centenary Female In stitute, Sommerville, Ala:, and of the Tennessee Female College. Address stinson $co,, Portiaod, Maine, novsgdcmwiy The Agricultural Department has issued a report made by one of its agents, who for years has made ob servations of the migrations of birds in the Mississippi Valley. Observa tions taken of about fifty species give an average rate travelled by the birds in their northward migra tion at twenty three miles a day. This does not mean the.rate of flight of an individual bird, but the aver age distance traversed by the whole host. The migration is not steady movement, with the same individ uals always in the van, but is per formed something after the manner of a game of leaf-frog. During day migration the smaller lnnd birds rarely fly faster than fifteen miles an hour, though cranes, geese, ducks and other large birds move much more rapidly. The report says that geese in their northward flight alonj? the Atlantic Coast traverse great distances, sometimes covering from 300 to 60u miles at a single (light, and it cannot be said positively that the larger birds do not do the same over the land. Still, the records so far made seem to indicate that the smaller land birds, such as the warb lers, finches and the likn. do nor perform lonr journeys at; one time when overhmd, but their voyages over the Gulf of Mexico prove that even these small speeioa possess great power of flight. - Intellectual Women.
