He has been so busv in fact,, that he will be unable to take his usual vacation this summer. . Mr. Thornycroft, R. A., has been commissioned to execute the frieze work which is to decorate the ex terior of the new building for the Institute of Chartered Accountants, now in course of erection in Moor gate street, London. The frieze is about 100 feet long. The town ofByattsville,Md., which elbows historic old Bladenburg, is going to put Henry George's .single tax theory to a practical test. It was made the issue in the recent local election, and the town corainis sioners who were chosen are con verts to the Georgie idea. It costs something to sell whiskey in Philadelphia as well as to drink it. In eleven wards, a few days ago. there were 1,396 applications and 489 licenses were granted. For the twenty six wards thus far announc ed there is a decrease of 107 licenses as4som pared with last year, and a decrease of 3,861 as compared with 1 7, when the old law was in force. The license there is very high, - Ex--President Cleveland has been elected a member of the memorial arch committee in New York. In accepting his election Mr. Cleve land wrote as follows: 'I have re ceived your note informing me of my election as a member of the com mittee on the erection of the Wash ington memorial arch. The purpose of the committee appeals in the strongest possible way to my sym pathy and approval, and I certainly feel much honored by my proposed relationship to this noble object. I gladly accept the place awarded to me on the committee, and only wish that I were sure of my ability to render very useful service Indications. For North Carolina, fair weather and stationary temperature. Monday is a legal holiday and the banks and the Produce Exchange will be closed. n This was a pretty quick piece of work. It comes from Rock Hill, S. C, and is in the shape of a special to the Charleston News and Courier: A meeting of the citizens of this place was held in the rooms of the Board of Trade to day for the pur pose of taking some action towards building a cotton seed oil mill. Maj. John R. London presided and Ire dell Jones acted as secretary. The proposed organization of a company was thoroughly discussed, and a committee was appointed to solicit subscriptions to the capital stock. In the report of the committee it was seen that the proposed capital stock of $30,000 should be increased to $50,000, which was aone.as $30,000 had been subscribed by those pres ent. An application was at once made to the Secretary of State for a commission, with John Ratterree, W. L. Roddey, A. H. White, W. H. Rawlinsou, John R. London and A. E. Smith as incorporators, who were authorized to secure a location for the mill and purchase the ma- chinery. At 10 o'clock this morning one of our prominent business men pro posed the meeting; at 11 o'clock it was held, and in less than an hour it was decided to build the mill. 8 50O Reward. Church, South, recently met in Nashville, Tenn., aridadopted the plan of Episcopal visitation for 1889. Bishop Hargrove was assigned to the First district, which includes the North Carolina Conference. The Conference will be held in Greens boro, beginning Nov. 27th. To Inspect the Guard. Col. R. J. Dodge, Eleventh U. S. Infantry, has been ordered to visit the camp of the North Carolina State Guard, at Wrightsville, from the 9th to the 13th of July, to in spect the troops. There was a Gen. Dodge,a brigadier general of volun teers, who was in command of this military post at one time shortly after the close of the war. We won ddjpif it is the same old Dodge. Children's Iay. To inorrew, the third Sunday in May, has been set apart by the General Conference of the Metho dist E. Church, South, as "Chil dren's Day." At Grace Church there will be no sermon in the morning, but the time will be occupied with such service as will be interesting and instructive to the children. At 3:45 in the afternoon Grace Sabbath school will convene and will receive the Sabbath schools of Fiftn Street and Bladen Street M. Foy, of Scott's Hill, was in the city to-day. He tells us that the people of his section have an abiding faith that they will move their crops this year over the W. O. 6 E. C. R. R. We understand that Mr. T. B. Kingsbury, for so many years past the editor of the Star, has resigned that position and that Maj. P. T. Duffy, a well known North Carolina newspaper writer, will fill the posi tion. To morrow night there wili.be special services of praise in the First Presbyterian Church, Hymns which have something of special interest in connection with their origin or history will be commented upon and used in singing. The season at Carolina Beach will open regularly on Monday next. The Sylvan Grove will make two runs on tha4; day, and every day thereafter, except on Sundjiy, leav ing here at 9:30 a. m. and 3 p. m. and returning at 1 and 6 p. m. The work of paving Market street, between Front and Second, has been very nearly completed. There is a scarcity of stone, however, and the pavers are not at work to day. If they can get the blocks in time they may be able to complete the work on Monday. City Court. Before the Mayor to day Robert Williams was charged with disor derly conduct. His Honor said $10 or 20 days. Louise Moore, disorderly, $5 or 10 days. Carrie Houston, disorderly, $20 or 30 days. Lively on the Coast. It was a lively time on the coast yesterday afternoon. The regular train on the Seacoast R. R. left here at 3 o'clock and was followed at 3:30 by the little locomotive of the Ocean View R. R., pulling the two handsome cars intended for that road. At 6 o'clock the regular train went down and later Mr. Harry Walters, General Manager of the Atlantic Coast Line, carried down a party of ladies and gentlemen in his handsome private car, drawn by one of the Coast - Line engines. Services at St. Paul's Episcopal Church to morrow at 11 a. in. and 8 p. in. The hour of Sunday school has been changed from 3:15 p. in. to 9:45 a. m. Mr. John G. Bagwell, a clever and courteous gentleman of much experience and business capacity, is chief clerk at the new Bonitz House in this city. We regret to learn of the affliction which has befallen the family of Mr. Jesse S. Williams, of Mason boro, in the death of his only child, a bright, promising little boy nearly two years old. The interment will take place to morrow afternoon, in Oakdale. The New and the Old. To-morrow will in all probability be a notable day in the history of Fifth Street Methodist Church of this city. As will be seen from ad vertisement in this issue the church building will be sold immediately to give room for the large and elegant edifice which the congregation in tend to build at once; and there fore tomorrow's services will per haps be the last that will be held in the old church which has become a . . . 1 ,i so near to an tne memuers uuu friends who have worshipped within its sacred walls so long. We under stand that the foundation for the new church will be laid at once and the work pushed forward unto com pletion. This church will be the largest in the State aud will be quite an ornament to our prosperous city. The object is, as expressed in the petition, to en courage the Wilmington Light In fantry in their laudable efforts to warns maintaining tneir organiza tion and to stimulate their patriotic efforts in celebrating the birthday of liberty on this continent. The signers agree to close at 1 o'clock so as to allow themselves and their em ployes an opportunity to attend the excursion of the W. L. I. on Monday next. The result is not positively known at this writing but the peti tion is being generally agreed to and we think there is but little doubt that there will be a half-holiday on Monday afternoon. DIED.
