An idea 01 Tnetoujed to the bracing air of winter, strength of the organization may be i is weakened by the warm days of the had from the fact that 75G associa tions which made reports have a membership of 159.319 nersons. Mr. Theodore A. Harding, correspond, ing member for Maryland, W. Va., and the District of Columbia, re ports as part of the work done in that area during the vear two new buildings erected, three libraries started, six reading rooms opened, eight associations started and 1,000 new members added. Mr. Charles A. Dana, of the New York jSun, has printed in his own paper, and supplies to the New York Tribune for publication, a batch of letters written by Mr. Horace Greeley during the Winter of lSSS-'Sb to Mr. Dana, then man aging editor of the Tribune and in charge of that paper during Mr Greeley's absence in Washington. Why the editor of the Sun should have given the letters out for publi cation is incomprehensible, their burden and perpetual theme being Mr. Dana's blundering, his want of discretion, his disposition to make unnecessary and unprovoked per sonal assaults, and his awkward gift of injuring the cause he pro fessed to be co-operating in. "I shall have to quit here or die," says Mr. Greeley in one letter, "unless you stop attacking people here with out consulting me. Do send some one here and kill me if you cannot stop this, for I can bear it no longer. My life is a torture to me.' Complaining of" an article in the Tribune pointing out the ways and means by which a British invader could overrun the South, rousing and arming the slaves, Mr. Greeley shows himself better disposed to the South than was his managing edi tor. "That article,"' said Mr. Gree ley, "implied that we foment aboli tion as a means of weakening and destroying the South.' In a subse quent letter he says again: "I charge you above all things not to allow anything to get- in which seems impelled by hatred of th South, or a desire to humiliate that section. On the contrary ours isthe coarse to renovate and exalt the South." What the proprietor of the Tribune most complained of was Mr. Dana's "dreadful" habit, as he call ed it, of "flinging' stones at one s own crockery" alienating friends by indiscreet and malicious criti cisms. "Oh, my friend,'" he ex. claims, "the wisdom which teaches what should not be said V changing season, and readily yields to attacks of disease. fclooa's rar- saparilla is just the medicine needed. After Buffer ing the most excruciating pain for a week, using liniments and various other remedies, a friend who sympathized with my helpless condition, said to me : 5 Why dont you get Swift's Specific and use it. I will guarantee a cure, and If It does not the medicine shall cost you nothing." I at once secured the S. S. S., and after using It the first day, had a quiet night and refreshing sleep. In a week I felt greatly benefitted. In three weeks I could sit up and walk about the room, and after using six bottles I was out and able to go to business. Since then I have been regularly at my post of duty, and stand on my feet from nine to ten hours a day, and am entirely free from pain.
