An article in EI Porvenin, a Carthagena jour nal, on the position of the Colom biain Government in relation to the canal, clearly demonstrates the rights of the Colombian Republic in the matter, and claims that the ownership and, consequently, the direction of the canal will revert to Colombia, and that Colombia will offer the whole to the United States This article has created! a profound sensation in Central America, and is likely to be the subject of much lively comment in France. 4 m - - The pig iron product of the South in 1880 was 397,301 tons In 1888 it was 1,132,858 tons, a gain of 190 per cent, in eight years.
