Infoitu nately there is but little pure whiskey to be Had and I know of but one which 1 can abso lutely reeommend and that is Duffy's, I have analyzed it carefully and found no fusel oil, no impurities, and nothing that could harm even a child. Duffy's Pure Malt W hiskey is also recommended by such high medical authori ties as Dr. Henry A. Mott, Prof. Win. T. Cut ter, Dr. t'amwelland others. WHEELER & MELICK M'F'Q CO., One of the great works of the last Administration was the rescue o the puhlic domain from persons ea amveA in securing larsre areas of it by fraudulent means. By an execu- j tive order there were created during j Mr. Cleveland's term a "board of j review" and a "division of contests" j to examine thoroughly all claims. All this is now to be undone in the interest, it appears, of the land j shai ks. The acting Land Corumis ! sioner has issued an order directing that no more cases be sent to the Board of Review for examination prior to being sent to patent. The 17,000 cases held for review by tbe Cleveland Administration are to be disposed of as rapidly as possible, with a view to abolishing the board. The eontet division is also, it is in timated, to be abolished as a "hin d ranee to business." There will be arreat rejoieiog over this among a class of ad venturers who have had a poor business for some vears past. -. In eon-! sideration of the fact that King Kalakaua has no scruples whatever against the centennial character of the Paris fair, and its typical glori fication of the Assemblee Nationale and the overthrow of the Bastile, like those which distress some of hi8 brother monarchs, it is to be hoped that he will be able to raise money somehow for his projected outing. An interesting fact brought out in the statistics of crime in New York city during the past year is the cul ture of the average criminal. There were 85,000 arrests, but of this large number only 4,337 are set down as without education. As the educated scamp is better able to elude arrest than the ignorant man, the propor tion of the educated to the unedu cated in these figures is astonishing. The common assertion is that igno ranee is the parent of crime, but New York statistics do not sustain it. If the figures prove anything in this regard, they prove the necessity of closing all the New York schools at once. The truth, probably, is that' the kind of education that im proves morals is the example of parents and neighbors in the ordi nary transactions of life, and not the conning of half understood books. As 56,000 of the New York arrests were of unmarried persons, the inference seems clear that mat rimony is a safeguard against the prison. But the former being com uaonly a life sentence, the figures in dicate a strong aversion on the part of the average man to that sort of a safeguard. A Lovely Woman overheard one say of her, "By heav en ! she's painted!" "Yes," retorted, she, indignantly, "and by heaven only!"
