Charlotte Democrat: Mr. Patrick, Tmiuierratioa Commissioner, met some Charlotte gentlemen Wednes dav nicrht in the interest of Char lotte's Exposition. The county and citv have subscribed $2,000. There is $1,000 more wanted. There is an old one armed Confederate sol dier in Wadesboro named Edmund Fenton. He is a printer and wants a job. He can set eight thousand ems a dav. We have no place for him. but if anvbody has. it would be a great help to him. Monroe Enquirer: A movement is n foot to secure the building of a railroad from Salisbury to Nor wood, Stanly county, via Albemarle. The commissioners of Stanly have ordered an election to be held in August on the question of subscrib insr $100,000 to the capital stock of the comnanv, with the understand ing that the bonds are not to be issued until active work shall have been begun, which is to be within three months from the date of elec tion. Stanly needs a railroad, and needs it badly: Shelby Aurora: Our entire coui munity was startled and grieved to hear Wednesday noon from Knox ville, Tenn., a telegram announcing the sudden death of Mrs. (Georgia Damron, the wife of our Mayor. W. L. Damron. She died June 12ui in Knoxville, where she and her hus band were visiting. She was a true and noble wife and her kind and gentle heart won for her friends wherever she went, and in her death Shelby has lost one of her sweetest young ladies. "Death touched her and she slept." Georgia Hoke Dam ron, daughter of ,J. S. and M. D. Borders, was born June 5th, 1867, married Sept. 1883, and died June 11th, 1889. Charlotte News: We regret to learn of the death of Mrs. J. M. Odell, which occurred at her home in Concord at 4 o'clock this morn ing, after a brief illness. Mrs. Odell was the wife of Capt. J. M. Odell, the leading cotton manufacturer of North Carolina. The mining editor of the Salisbury Herald evi dently keeps posted in regard to the mining events of Mecklenburg. In the last issue of that paper he says:The sinking of the new main shaft at the Henderson mine is progressing fairly. They are now sinking in some good paying brown ore that is worked up on the mill. Their yield is said to be sufficient to pay about one half the expenses in curred in sinking the new shaft. About three miles southeast of Charlotte lies a body of rich farm ing land, and lately free gold was discovered on it. The present own er objected to having the land dis turbed by digging prospect holes. The prospectors go to the Register's office and examine the title, and find the former sold the land and re served the mineral right for the heirs. The ore, a brown decom posed quartz and schist, is now be ing mined and sampled for mill tests. One dump assayed high grade, and one of the heirs has re fused a big offer for his interest. The vein lies in a mineral belt run ning parallel with the Rudisill and St. Catherine's belt. "An idler is a watch that lacks both hands; As useless if it goes as when it stands." Alas! how many women, though household and children need their care, are necessarily idle, because suffering from disease peculiar to their sex.
