Perry, proprietor of the hotel at Carolina Beach, was in the city to day. He says that there has been a big run lately on pig fish but that he has managed to meet the demand. How to Sell a Hat A colored gentleman from the country stepped into Mr. M. B. Shrier's hat store this morning to buy a hat. He found one that suit ed him but thought the price too high and remarked that he would look around and if he could not find one that suited him better for the price he would return and buy that. He then picked up a bundle which he had laid on the counter and slyly rolled the hat up with it. Mr. Risley saw him and waited until he got to the door and then collared him and told him to give up the hat. The man was cornered and was led back into the store and was glad to com promise by paying for the hat. The Island Hath Hotel Mr. Horace Piatt, proprietor of the Island Beach Hotel, at the Hammocks, is in the city to day and he tells us that he has had a re markably successful season thus far. This success is tho best com mentary on Mr. Piatt's management. All who stop there speak in high terms of everything the general ease and eqm fort of the guest, the excellence of the cuisine, the super ior service at the tables and in the rooms and the courtesy and atten tion which is accorded to every guest Thje price of regular meals at the table d'hote will hereafter be 75 cents but there is an excellent cafe attached where a delightful fish supper can be had for 50 cents. The committees appointed at the joint meetiugs of the lodges of Knights of Pythias in this city, held yesterday, are succeeding well in their work of procuring funds for a testimonial to Mr. Richard F. War ren. They expect to raise about $150, perhaps more, but the shape the testimonial will take has not yet been decided upon. A meeting will be called in a day or two when the committees will compare notes and report progress. Sale of Real Estate. The real estate in the Southeast ern part of tub city, and one tract in Federal Point township, adver tised in the Review for sale to day, at the Court House at 12 o'clock, by order of Mr. R. H. Bunting, Com missioner, was sold at public auc tion by Messrs. S. VanAmringe & Co., auctioneers. The figures are not reported, in view of the fact that it is not yet known if the sale will be confirmed. A motion for oonfirmation will be made to mor row. A Surf Patrol. Our suggestion as to a patent of life-saving boats being kept on guard at all surf bathing resorts meets with much approval. A num ber of gentlemen have approached us on the subject, warmly endorsing the idea, and hoping that it may be carried out. One of these, in con versing with us on the subject this morning, thought that the boatmen might be supported by voluntary contributions placed in boxes erect ed on tjie beach for this purpose.but we think that this idea is hardly feasible. Good boatmen, men that could be relied upon in cases of emergency, would hardly care to take the chances of such an arrange ment. There is no doubt of a handsome reward whenever the boatmen should prove of benefit in actually preserving life, but this might and probably would prove a rare event. Our friend tells us of an instance at Morehead last Summer where a young latjy's Mfe was gal lantly preserved by a young man, a stranger to all on the beach. He brought her to -shore and was mod estly retiring when a very wealthy gentleman, who witnessed the scene, stepped up aud tapped him on the shoulder and asked to speak to him. He then led him aside aud handed him a sealed envelope, with the request that o woud not open it immediately. When the young man did open it afterwards he found en closed therein $100, with the request that he would accept it as a test! monial of his gallantry. In this connection we will state that Mr. R. E. L. Brown, proprietor of the restaurant on. "Wrightsville Beach , and himself one of the heroes of the late gallant rescue, in com menting on the article in the Um N E W ADVKRTI8EM ENT8. Daniel, Shaw and W. H. French, of Rocky Point, were in the city to day. Go to the Beach. The Wilmington Light Infantry give their grand military excursion to Carolina Beach to morrow. I will be an unusually notable affair. There will be five boats during the day. Refreshments will be served at city prices and there will be music and dancing. The Grove aud the Passport will both run, and there will also be an excursion party there from South port. Everybody should go and carry his wife and children. About the New Postmaster. There have been rumors here for some days past to the effect that Mr. Geo. Z. French, the newly ap pointed Postmaster at this 'place, would not take the position; that his appointment had been revoked or that he had resigned. This, we un derstands from good authority, is not so. Mr. French's bond has been forwarded and it is presumed that it has been accepted, as nothing to the contrary has been heard. We un derstand that he expects to take charge of the office here in a few weeks. You Make Us Blush. The Charlotte News, in speaking of the various Summer resorts in the limits of the State, has this to say of our "city by the sea:" . Should one tire of the mountains presto! and he is at Wilmington. Then comes the varied rounds of pleasure and sight-seeing the boat ing and the fisbing.the surf bathing. the shell gathering, and and if it must be told the moonlight strolls and love making on the beach! A man who wouldgrowl at what is Ito oe naa at ana around Wilmington, would growl at anything short of heaven and would sorely grieve be cause nothing there could be found to growl at.
