On a certain day one fall, as I
was standing on the shore of Cran
berry Bog Pond, writes a corres
pondent of Forest and Scream, I
paw a large flock of ducks near the
111 iddie of the pond, and soon after
discovered three otters in front of
me, but not near enough to shoot.
While watching the manoeuvres of
these otters and scanning the pond
for other discoveries, the otters
started down the pend in a straight
line for the dueks. The old leader
struck out lively, leaving his mates
far behind, and as he neared the
ducks he dove, and presently J satv
one of the ducks disappear beneath
the surface, after considerable of a
struggle, the remainder of the flock
rising and flying away in great com
motion. The otter had gone under
the flock and selected a certain duck
and pulled him under. A minute
later the otter'made his appearance
near the south shore of the pond
with a duck in his mouth.

Earth's Wonders and Beauties.
Looking into that remarkable
work of Commodore Maury's
Maury's Physical Geography we
see such valuable and exciting in
formation we never fail to wonder
that so few people read it especially
when so little reading gives such
unbounded information. Below is
an extract:
"The selvas of the Amazon and
the forests of Orinoca are as re
markable in their way as the pam
pas and the llanos.
Here the vegetable kingdom dis
plays itself in great glory.
Air, earth, and water, kave eacli
their floral, and all are most luxur
iant. Here is found the unique Victoria
Regia, an enormous water lily, a
single ieaf of which is large enough
to float a man. It has a superb
white flower the most gigantic
that blooms.
Air plants with the most fantastic
shapes, beautiful leaves, and curious
flowers, hang suspended from the
bandies and festoon the forests.
The trees and undergrowth stand
so thick that often the voyager has
to spend the night in his canoe be
cause there is no room, on account
ot the trees, to land and light a fire.
The trees are studded with para
sites, twined, and interlaid, and
matted with vines and creepers so
thickly that the tree tops form a
roof over which the monkeys travel
for miles without once coming to
earth. It is here and there only
that the sun can find a loop hole
through which to dart a ray.
Among the trees of the Amazon
and the Orinoco are found the cow
tree, with its milk; the bread fruit
tree, with its loaf, the candle tree,
with its taper; the blanket tree,
with its coverlets, the whiskey tree,
with its toddy: the silk tree with its
floss; the algarola tree, with its
beano; which furnishes the natives
with both bread and beer for them
selves and provender for their cattle;
the india rubber tree, the soap
tree.
The fmit of the Copercinia palm
is wax. Then there is the crythoxy
lon cocoa, with its wonderful leaf
that prevents fatigue aad-stays both
hunger and thirst. Besides there
are twenty five varieties of the cin
chona tree, with its fragant blos
soms and medicinal bark-, and a
flora that is enriched with a great
variety of palms, and nuts, and drugs
and plotisoius, and resins affording
ornamental, and dye, and incense
woods of rare beauty and exquisite
odor. '
In Venezuela alone there are not
less than one hundred and eighty
varieties of plants that are cultivat
ed, while in the forest are found
thirty six different kinds that yield
valuable gums and resins, forti six
that are medicinal, and two hun
dred and forty thatare t esteemed,
either as ornamental, dye, or use
ful woods.
