Too Young, By Far, to Die. We regret to learn of the death of Mr. Walter Hewlett, son of Mr. Elijah Hewlett. He died at his father's residence, on Masonboro Sound, on Friday afternoon, after a short sickness. He was in the very bloom of youth, only 20 years of age, a great favorite with all who knew him and life open before him with all of its limitless hopes and ambi tions. The funeral services toofi place yesterday afternoon, at Ma sonboro Baptist Church, and the interment was in the family burying ground. . Only a Few Particulars. From the Durham JPlant we learn some few particulars as to the death of Miss Pearl Yates, Rev. Dr. Yates1 youngest daughter, of which we spoke in Saturday's issue. She was only 19 years of age and had been sick just two weeks with typhoid ever, fehe died at 7 o'clock on Fri day evening. As the Plant truly says: u,Tis in such distressing inci dents as this that the resurrection and the life beyond the grave comes to us in all its beauty to reconcile us to what seems to our finite under standing to be harsh judgment of the loving and all-merciful Father." Weather Crop Bulletin. The reports of correspondents of the Weekly Crop Bulletin, publish ed by the North Carolina Experi - ment Station and State Weather Service, cooperating with theUnited StatesSignalService, show that there has been a marked deficiency of rain fall an abnormally high temperature and very much sunshine during the week ending Friday, June 21st. All crops have been favorably affected and the outlook is very encouraging, a number of correspondents stating that "the prospect for an abundant crop is better than for five years." The wheat crop will be unusally fine. The oat croo. although not up to the average, will be probably better than our previous reports in dicated. Cotton has made great iumroveuient and now bids fair to make an average crop. Corn is do. ing fairly well. The yield of fruit is generally very abundant, although the crop in the southwestern por tion of the State is reported short, The season so far has been very fa vorable to tobacco. The C. F. & Y. V. K. K. The schooner Anna V. Lamson has arrived with a cargo of steel n ,i . 1 t 1 rails tor tne aoove roau, ana sue now lies at the company's wharf discharging her carg. Another ves sel. the schooner H. X. Ofranam, is Tt . daily expected, with a cargo of rails. This makes four schooner loads of rails on the company's wharf. By the latter part of this week the track will be ready to allow the first engine to run into the corporate limits of the city. About five miles of track has now been laid on the Wilmington end of the road, and the track laying force are very busy pushing forward the work. Some little delay will be occasioned by having to wait for the completion of the Fishing Creek trestle, but it will only be a few days before this can be crossed. Gen,' M. P. Taylor, the assistant engineer, is supplying the track layers with cross ties in the meantime to avoid delays. In conw sequence of the scarcity of timber on the first fifteen miles of track, the ties have all to be furnished from this end. . Very shortly a large guano ware house will be erected on the upper end of the company's property, at the mouth of the canal leading in to the Point Peter rice mill. This warehouse will be 140x50 feet, with a platform on the river front of about 100 feet square. The wharf will be ready to receive the warehouse at Point Peter about the middle of July. Tne warehouse is now already framed and ready for erection just so soon as the wharf is ready to receive it. It is estimated that the track -lavers will reach Point Caswell in about six weeks from this time, say Sorry to Say Good-By . We regret to learn that Mr. E. G. Barker has positively determined on removing from Wilmington. He will go to Massachusetts and em bark in business there. He is one of our best citizens, enterprising, public spirited and large-hearted, and it seriously distresses us to have such men leave us. . Mr. Barker's riends prophesy that he will return o us within two years and he him self says that the last thing he will do before leaving here will be to drink some of the Rock Spring wa ter, for he knows that he will-want to come back. He thinks that the outlook for Wilmington's future was never so bright as it is now. Mr. Barker has been a resident of Wil mington for more than twenty years past. The Way to Talk It. Here is some mighty nice, sensible talk. It is from our level headed cotemporary, the Mt. Olive Tele- gram, which paper, by the way, also calls on Capt. Cotchett to go there and give some cheap excursion rates, as everybody about there wants to come down here. Our neighbor says: The season is here for pleasure and health. Many of those who are able will take themselves off to the mountains and seashore. From a perfect knowledge of the advantages offered, we can commend to our readers and friends the advantages offered by Wilmington and its sea side resorts. While there are other places of merit in the State, none possesses the degree of advantages that our metropolis does. The easy access, by rail and steamers, the changes afforded by Wrightsville, Hammocks. Carolina Beach, the Rocks, Southport, Fort Caswell, Bald Head and Fort Fisher, ah give to tne pleasure and health seeKer a diversity onered oy :no other place in the State, and at small cost. While Wilmington has every feature of pleasure offered by any of the summer resorts, it has manyplaces of historic interest and beauty. A visit to Fort Caswell will more than pay the visitor. Those who go to Wilmington should visit all of its resorts and places of inter est. To do this will take at least two days and then no time to spare You will find the citizens polite and determined to please their visitors. Let all who want to eniov a few days of real pleasure go down. early in August, and we presume kindly to all Wilmington frieuds. A Pleasant Acknowledgment. Dr. Benjamin Lee, Secretary and Executive Officer of the Pennsylva nia State Board of Health, has written from Johnstown to Dr.Thos, F. Wood, of this city, acknowledg ing the reception of the tar and rosin sent on from this city and speaking of the great help it has been to them in their work. Dr. Lee also encloses copies of the latest issue .of their health bulletin, from which we ex tract the following paragraph: "Two details are at work collect ing garbage and cremating the same with rosin, a very acceptable dona tion of which has been received from Wilmington, N. C. Details patro the river below the stone bridge night and day to arrest all putrify- mcr matter set tree trom the dritt. Yesterday five bodies were thus. re claimed, and many carcasses ot am uials dragged out and cremated." We publish herewith in full Dr Lee's letter to Dr. Wood, which we have been kindly permitted to do by the latter gentleman: State Board of Health, ) Johnstown, Pa., June 21, 1889.) Dr. Tho8. F. Wood, Secretary State Board of Health: Dear Doctor: Enclosed you wil please find a number of our bulletins for the lUth mst., in wnicn mention is made of the use to which the rosin and tar so kindly sent us by your fel low citizens has been put. N o gift that we have receiyed in the way of dis infectants has been more acceptable or of more immediate value. It en ables us to cremate dead animals in the last stages of putrefaction without rendering the air offensive. We had already chanced to find a few barrels, which we used before yours arrived and were then long ing for more. I beg ypu to express to the good citizens of your beautiful town the sincere thanks of myself, individual ly, and of the citizens of Johnttown. for this kindly remembrance. These great calamities are occasionally permitted by a wise Providence for the purpose of binding us the closer with the bonds of brotherhood and sympathy. The Germania Cornet Band will give an open air concert in the City Hall Park next Fridav night.
