From the last report of Krnpp's establishment at Essen it .appears that in 1833 there were only nine workmen and in 1848 seventy four. In July, 1888, the establishment em ployed 20.960 men, of whom 13,626 were at Essen. Including the famis hes of the workmen they supported a population of 73,969 souls, of whom 24,193 lived in houses provided by the firm. There are at Essen 1,195 furnaces of various constructions, 286 boilers, 92 steam hammers of from 100 to 50,000 kilos, 370 steam engines with a total of 27,000 horse power, 1,724 different machines and 361 cranes. Of coal and coke 2,735 tons are daily used and 11 high fur naces of the latest constructions produce 600 tons of iron per day. Gen. Stephen D. He de clares for white supremacy in Miss issippi and throughout the South, but he does not think that is to day the leading issue in that State- Industrial progress is what is need ed. Whatever tends to make the people prosperous is the first con sideration. Manufactures, improved systems of agriculture and the encouragement of white immigra tion are the matters to which public attention and the energies of the people should be most actively directed. He is fast weeding out all the colored employes at the White House. The colored cook and most of the color ed servants who used to be around the White House in Mr. Cleveland's time have been dispensed with, and the few that remain will be given their liberty during the summer season when the Presidential house hold is away at Deer Park, and will not be invited to return when the summer seaeon is over. White men and women will take their places. One part of the late lamented Lord Sackville's domestics are now on deck at the White House. The kitchen mates and area belles of the British legation under Lord Sack ville will soon have a complete re union at the White House under Mr. Harrison. Lord Sackvllle's French butler, who has been spend ing his holiday in Paris, is under stood to be about to return to the United States to rejoin his accom pushed trench wife, who has for some time been in charge of Presi dnt Harrison's "wittles." Even poor old Hawkins -the historic Hawkins is not to be spared. A white man is henceforth to sit on the box of the White House carriage, and as Harrison insists upon a foot- man, wnicn .air. uieveiana never had, the white coachman will be re inforced by a white footman.
