Belford's for July. Belford-8 Magazine for July is at hand and as usual with an excellent table of contents. "The Republican and the Democratic Parties " is a fine dissertation upon the leading points dividing the two great par. ties of the day: k'The Lady of the Club"' is a pleasant little romance; "Brains and Biscuit' is a clear, forcible article; "Mr. Walk-a leg Adams meets with a Tartar" is brimful of interest; "True and False Civil Service Reform'" is a scathing article upon one of the greatest farces and humbugs of the day; and "That Fascinating Greek" is a very fascinating story. "Roanoke of Roanoke Hall" is the novel for the month. It is by Malcolm Bell, is an extremely interesting story, and The Prizes and the Winners. There were not as many at Caro lina Beach yesterday, on the excur sion given by Howard Relief Fire Engine Co. No. 1, as we were led to expect by the report of one who saw the boat leave. The weather was against them yet those who were present certainly had a good time. There was no rain at the Beach. In the target shooting the first prize, a gold -headed cane, was won by Mr. C. Richter; the second prize, also a gold headed cane, was won by Mr, P. N. Pick. The third prize, a silver headed cane, was won by Mr. J. G. Oldenbuttel, and the fourth prize, also a silver-headed cane, was awarded to Mr. M. Rath-. Jen. in the contest for the ladies prize, Miss Mamie Moore luade the best shot, and was awarded the prize, a solid silver fruit knife. After this, another contest was opened for prizes and the first was won by Mr. Wm. Tienken, who made the best shot, and was awarded a gold ined silver cup. The second was won by Mr. J. G. Oldenbuttel. who was awarded the second prize, a silver cup, and the third, prize, a gold lined silver thimble, was also won by Mr. Oldenbuttel. Thorough Training. Yesterday's Messenger says in its Raleigh correspondence: It has been suggested to Your cor respondent by Rev. Bennett Smedes, Kector ot St. Mary's School, that exact justice has not been done to one of Wilmington's fair daughters, a student at that college. v hen it is known the high standard set for its roll of honor antl the necessary re quirements to reach it establish not only the high grade and excellence ot the school, but the distinguished requirements that teachers must possess and the dilligence and capa city that students must develop in order to get recognition, it neces sarily follows that one who reaches the first place upon its roll of hoaor should have due credit. At ,he late commencement on the roll of honor the highest errade was obtained by Miss Annie Moore, of Wilmington, having an average of 99.1 for the whole session, the high est average for the last year which was made by any pupil ot the school. It is well enough to add here that the young lady in question had been for vears a pupil at Misses Burr & James' Female School, in this city, and was prepared there for the course at St. Mary's. Nums bers of Wilmington girls have gone to St. Mary's from this school and with possibly one exception they have taken a high stand there. This shows the thoroughness and excel lence of the training at this school. Mnsicale Last Night. That the people of Wilmington are a music loving people is plainly evidenced by the fact that neither "wind nor weather" is allowed to deter them when a treat of this kind is in store. Such was the case last night, rne weather was bad and the streets were decidedly sloppy and yet there was a large audience at the Opera House to attend the musicale given for the benefit of the building fund of Grace M.E. Church. The opening piece was a vocal quartette from Weber's. Frei Schritz, which was very finely re n derly by Messrs. Bowden, Emerson, Jacobs and Grant. Capt. Geo. P. Welsh followed in a solo, which was recived with delight by the au dience; Miss Florence Bowden harmed and delighted the audi enoe with that exquisite hymn, "Lead, Kindly Light" and respond ed to a rapturous encore with "Let Me Dream Again." Mr. W. N. Jacobs rendered a cornet solo in a masterly manner and Mrs. Muse sang an exquisite solo, followed with I i : i i i r t t i a uariLoue soio oy iiir. r. it. nawes, rendered with much spirit. Then came the duet, "Oh, that we two were Maying," by Miss Bowden and Mr. Emerson, and this closed the first part of the entertainment. The cornet solo of Mr. Schloss drew forth much applause from the aadience and Mr. Greenewald was well received in his solo. Miss Schwarz's solo from Handel was beautifully sung. The duo, 'The Night," by Miss Sen war? and Mr. Emerson, was rendered exquis itelv, and the trio, "Run up the Sail," was delightful. The programme closed with the NEW ADVERTISEMENTS.
