The Carolina Central offers remarkably cheap rates to those wishing to visit Wil mington and ' Wrightsville during the Encampment, now in progress at Wrightsville Sound. Round trip tickets are now on sale for the small sum of $4.20 good to return until 20th. Tickets will be on sale until the 15th. ' . Personal. Mr. Thos. C. James, Joint Agent at Charlotte of the Seaboard Air Line and the Piedmont Air Line, is in the oity with his family. ' Dr. R. H. Holliday, of Clinton one of the survivors of Co. 1, (Wil mington Rifle Guards) 18th Regi ment, arrived here yesterday after, noon but too late, to his great re gret, and that of his comrades, to go down to Carolina Beach. The following distinguished gen tleraen were registered at the Orton House last night: Gov. Fowle, Col. W. L. Saunders, Attorney General Theo. F. Davidson, Hon. Alfred Rowland, Judges R. F. Armfield and John A. Gilmer, Maj. John C. Win der, Capt. V. V. Richardson and Capt. W. H. McLaurin. - " ; i A Big Ilat on a Big Man. Charley Willis is in town, pretty considerably so. On a bet this morning he donned he , great big straw hat which Mr. I. Shrier has had for; some time past, and decorat ing it with the national colors wore it down Front street to the Market House. He then "set 'em up." He ought to wear it down to" Wrights ville this afternoon. He would at tract more attention than the brasa buttons and gold lace -on the ground. At the Hammocks Iast Night. It was magnificent at the Ham mocks last night, only the heat was dreadful. It was- one of the rare nights on which there was no breeze. But there was the next best thing to that. There was, a very largo turnout of pretty girls. There were more of those at the 'island Beach Hotel last night than we have seen in one gathering in many days. Of course gallant cavaliers were not wanting, The dance wai vin the spacious dining' room at the hotel, which Mr. PJatt had kindly placed at their disposal. The large piazzas were also crowded with lookers on and promenaders. The dance was the german. The last train left at 2 o'clock. 1 Big Travel on the Seacoast. There were nearly 3,000 ; passen gers on the Seacoast Road yester day. The resources of the road are pretty severely taxed but Capt. Nolan seems equal to all emergen cies. The trains are composed of from five to eight coaches and they are always full. So far we have heard of not the slightest accident occurring to any' one on any hi these crowded trains. And this leads us to say that' those who are. vexed at some delay.inoomprehensl. ble to them, should recollect tliat there is no delay without its ade quate cause; that caution is the first thing to be considered and that this very delay ensures the safety of life and limb which might otherwise, b imperilled. WILMINGTON, N. C. Peterson's Magazine. Pvle ron' for August is a model number. The - steel - engraving 4Baby Brother," must ch arm every picture lover, and the double size I fashion nlate will delkrht the hosts of feminine subscribers. The full Pge wood engraving, "A Sudden Blow," is exceedingly effective, and the work table designs are admir ably suited to the season. The open ing story, "That Summer at Ana wan," is capital and fitly illustrated. "Blue Bells," is a pretty poem, ac companied by a very graceful de sign of the flowers. A .new serial, "Ted and I J opens promisingly and "In St. Tammany Parish": grows more absorbingly interestingV As usual there is an ample supply of short stories and good poetry. A paper on "Home Dressmaking" will prove invaluable to any lady who wishes to attempt the making or altering of her gowns. Two dollars a year. Jones is Dying. As we write one of the most gal lant spirits our good old State has ever known is quietly passing away to its final rest and its great reward. Col. L. C. Jones is dying, and will hardly live to greet another sun. This announcement wU carry grief and distress to thousands of manly and womanly hearts.' There is no one for whom our people as a whole Will mourn more sincerely; pone whose Joss will be more severely felt and whose place will be more diffi cult to fill. ' Col, Jones returned here last Mon day from the scene of the accident near Polkton, where under his per sonal and energetic supervision the break in the road was repaired. He was unwell and went to bed and had remained there ever since. His con dition soon became alarming and his family, then at his residence in- Jonesboro, were telegraphed for and a special train sent for them. Col. Jones' w,ife and a son and daughter arrived promptly on this train and have been with him ever since, urs. wooa ana oei- Jamy were his physicians and they have exhausted all of the resources known to medical skill and science, una vail ingly, to save his Valuable life Last night there was a sudden and alarming loss of vitality and the heart ceased almost to perform its functions but by great exertions a partial resteration was accomplish ed. There has since been no hope beyond the hope that' always re mains as long as life continues in the body and at almost any mom ent we may hear that his noble spirit has left its tenement of ' clay behind and has soared to 1 another and a better world than this. No mortal yet has e'er forecast The moment that shall he his last, but Drr Pierce's FJeasant feliets have forever settled the question oi a comfortable existence until that moment does arrive, and put to fifo-lit the melancholy forebodings of sufferers from billiousness, head ache; indigestion, consumption, and kindred aumenrs.
