The thermometer had been up as high as 115 degrees. The New Band. The new band for the Island Beach Hotel arrived here last even ing from Baltimore, as indicated by us in yesterday's issue, and went immediately down to the Ham mocks. They will play to-morrow night at a german to be given at the hotel. . -: j The Masquerade. : There was a very large crowd at Carolina Beach last night, at the masquerade given there. It wasone of the most successful events known in the history of that popular re. sort. It is estimated tnat nearly a thousand people were present dur ing the day and evening. There was some good music for the dancers and a very fine display of fireworks for everybody. Johnson, who was in Richmond countySaturday, says the Charlotte News, was struck by the flourishing appearance of a certain field of cotton on Col. Roper's splendid farm near Laurinburg. The cotton is of a new species known as the Bailey cotton. A single statk was found growing wild on the Cape Fear by a darkey who saved the seed and cultivated the plant with success. The plant is from five to six feet high, with spreading limbs, and is of a peculiar appearance The fibre is silken and glossy and very fine. Col. Roper paid $400 for two bushels of the seed. It is said that he was also indebted to dealers in Richmond and Baltimore. "Mr. Piatt made no legal assignment and one of his creditors in this city found out that he had a suite of furniture at the Hammocks belonging to him and he went down there with a warrantTyesterday af -ternoon and got it. It is said that a summary demand for past due rente precipitated the flight that Mr. Piatt may have had in view. No one supposes for a moment that he left here empty-handed. Don't Read This for 8500.
