There are some very fine truck lands on the line of the Wilmington and Weldon Railroad, in Pender and Duplin counties. Around Bur gaw they are as good as at any other point. A few days ago a friend of ours paid a visit to that town and visited the trucking farm of Mr. J. T. Collins, the merchant and planter. Everything indicated good judgment, thrift and enter prise. Mr. Collins has realized handsomely this year from garden truck and fruit. There are plenty of fine lands in that section awaiting cultivation. In the Southwe The colored commission who were appointed by the proposing colored emigrants in North Carolina to go and spy out the land, have been down in Little Rock, Ark., and in Memphis, Tenn,, and they have got their names and their purposes in the papers in those cities. The commission is composed of four per sons, Geo W. Price, of this city, who is the president of the Association, L. R. Ferrebee, Richard Ashe and I. G. Hayes. They seem to be well pleased -with the lands they have seen and will advise a portion of their people at least as to the ad vantages of a removal to Arkansas. The tale the commission told the ' newspapers is the oft-repeated one as to the strength of the organiza-. tion, the poor pay of laborers here and the injustice of legislative eg ' actiuent. It was under the management of Prof. Nobles, of this city, and there were in all about 75 teachers present, including teaoh ers of private as well as public schools. The institute was a success in every way. Many of the teachers stood an examination for a State certificate. The Butchers in Council. At a meeting rof the butchers of Frout Street Market, held this day. Mr. T. A. Watson was called to the chair and Mr. R, L. Fox was made Secretary. The chairman stated the object of the meeting to be to arrange a con ference with the committee on mar kets from the Board of Aldermen relative to better regulations for the market. Messrs. T. A. Watson, Jno. F. Garrell and I. B. Rhodes were ap pointed to arrange for this conference-, and to report at a subsequent meeting. Southport and Her Railroads. Southport is stirred up now, from centre to circumference, on the rail road question. There are two Rich monds in the field, one the South Atlantic & Northwestern R. R. Co. and the other, the Cape Fear & Cincinnati R. R. Co. The former was-first in the field, having had surveys made three years ago but as yet not having accomplished any. thing, and the latter is a new con cern, having been but recently or ganized. The S. A. & N. W. is com poed principally of Eastern men, of Bait imore and New York, and the C. F. & C. of Chicago capitalists. Col. George B. Morton, of. Balti more, who has been in Southport for some days past, and who was in the city yesterday, seems; to be, h o we ver allied with the Western, men. He is as close as a clam, how ever, and will tail nothing as. yet He says, we understand, that he wil disclose' the" enti re scheme to the citizens of Southport) in a few days. It is said, in connection with this scheme, that twenty solid business men from Chicago, representing a combined capital of $40,000,000, will bejn Southport early in September to" look over f the ground. In the meantime the" projector of this new scheme for "a road from Southport to Cincinnati seems to have worked some activity Into the slow-moving people of the S. A. & N. W. RR. and a correspondence has been ac tive of la4e between parties in South port interested in this road and dapitalists in New York. I As a consequence of these things the town is alive now wth railroad talk and the citizens are beginning j to feel assured that something tan- j gible will arise from one or the other ! projection. This feeling is strength ened by the fact that a corps of railroad surveyors have , lately been at work In various parts of tbe town, bat just exactly what they have surveyed, and'what for, seems eiHenlt to understand."' Nolan will tender for the purpose. At the IJeach Iast Night. ' There was a fine time among the "natives" at Carolina Beach last night. Nearly everybody danced and everybody enjoyed it. The fun took ; place in the dining room of the hotel. The music was fur nished by Prof. Dallas Fennell,Prof. Dave Soutkerland and Prof. Hugh McLaurin (on the triangle). The affair was under the management of Prof. Smith. The exercises were opened by Host Perry with an ex cerpt from Fisher's hornpike which was gracefully rendered. The ladies turned out in force and it was ! an exceedingly enjoyable dance, j A "candy pulling" closed the "exercises." In this Prof. Har ris bpp made a distinguished de but. He got "stuck" on a piece that was too hard to pull and too soft to "chaw" and it -took the united strength of Pro. Southerland and Prof, somebody else to get his jaws apart in time for breakfast.
