' A Simple lielief for Lung Troubles.
For the benefit of those of .our
readers who suffer from the effects
of weak or diseased lungs, we pub
lish the following, which is clipped
from the Scientific American'.
. It has long been known that pine
needle pillows would alleviate persons-afflicted
with lung troubles,
and a Florida editor relates an inci-
rlpnfc in snnnnrt, of the fact as fol
i' i -
lows: During a visit to the home o
a most estimable lady living on In
dian River, this editor .was told of a
discoverv that had been made which
may prove a boon to sufferers from
luntr or bronchial troubles. This
lady having heard that there was
peculiar virtue in a pillow made
from pine straw, and having none
of that material at hand, made one
from fine, soft, pine shavings, and
had the pleasure of noting imme
diate beneilt. Soon all the members
of the household had pine shavings
pillows, and it was noticed that al1
coughs, asthmatic . or bronchia
troubles abated at once after sleep-.
ine a few nights on these pillows.
An invalid suffering with, lung
trouble derived much' benefit from
sleeping upon a mattress made from
pine shavings. The material ischeap
and makes a very pleasant and com
fortable mattress, the odor of the
pine permeating the entire room and
absorbing or dispelling & unpleas
ant odors. .

is very pleasant to taste. It soothes

.Some North Carolina Enterprises.
It Is very gratifiying to read of
the great number of improvements
that are being made and of the new
enterprises that are springing into
existence every day or so in this
State, and to give some idea of
,what is going oh among us we pub
lish the following from the Chatta;
nooga Tradesman:
"R. B. Miller, proprietor of the
Laurel cotton mills, Shelby, writes
that he has put in GOO twister spin dles
and is supplying his factory
with fire. pump, hydrants, etc."
"The canning factory at Ruther
ford, is now in full blast. About
ten hands are employed, and the
average is about 300 cans pefday.
Three thousand cans are novready
for market."
"C. W. Hunt, Burlington, writes
that W; H. Turrentine has built and
equipped a hoop factory for mak-
ing barrel hoops; also that T. P.
Moore has built and equipped a fac
tory for hard wood and will make
shuttle and bobbins and anything
else, of- such wood as dogwood and
persimmon."
"Arthur, Coffin & Co., Bryson
City, are enlarging their wood work
ing machinery. Are now cutting
large quantity of walnut, square,
and turning locust, and wrtl also
m
add insulator pin machine and will
want to buy then. WiU also put in
large saw null and other wood work
ing machinery. They are now sit
ing a large saw mill near that place
when they jxpect to cut some ten
million-feet of popular lumber."
"Dr. W. A. Lash, Walnut Cove,
writes that the Walnut Cove Luiu"
ber Company was formed several
months ago with a paid up capital
of $10,000 to erect a!sash, door, blind
and tobacco box factory. The com
pany has now a building erected
and most of tho machinery in place.
Will commence operation in five
days. They will increase their stock
to $20,000 in thirty days and will
have the capacity to consume about
25,000 feet of lumber per day. Also
that A, I. Fair has the -house erect
ed and is putting i'n machinery for a
steam flouring and grist mill. A. I.
Taylor is building a tobacco ware
house here. Cahill & Binford are
receiving to day 40 horse power
boiler for a saw mill plant."
"J. W. Pumple, Mayor qf Salis
bury, writes that ft Minnesota wool
working firm will move its plant to
Salisbury, The Yadkin Railroad
Co. will build a'hne down the Yad
kin river, 45 miles, via Gold Hill and
Albermarie to Norwood in Stanley
county. This opens a way into an
undeveloped timber and mineral
country. The R. & D.-Railroad Co.
will connect Moeksville with Salis
bury by way of Cleveland, thus
opening Davie county to the Salis
bury trade. It is understood;thatthe
Salisbury cotton mill will enlarge its
plant to the extent bf at least a hunt
dred thodsandjdoilars.' f
"Mr. W. A.&j. Schreibereb
ster, contemplates developing val
uable deposits of kaolin and china
clay. The largest deposit is situated
along a river, with plenty of water
power and only three and one half
miles from railroad depot: The
quality of clay has been sufficiently
tested and pronounced second to
none. Some very fine porcelain or
china has been made from it, v A
large syndicate is being formed to
purchase all jfcU'e nickel or chrome
deposits, over 1,000.. acres, in this
section ' and manufacture various
products froift' the ores. A" newly
invented process is expected to be
put in operation. Bi-carbornate of
potash and chrome paint of very
superior quality ha,ve been produc
ed by an experimental plant with
satisfactory results. Several corun
dum deposits have lately been found
and are being developed wUU the
view of selling them. Amianthus, a
fine grade of asbestos, has been di
covered.' The extent of it will be
known soon." .
