L Frogs and Coots. j Coots in. market this morning. High? Oh no. Only 65 cents a dozen. By the way; it is said that coots spring from frogs; that ,he millions of little green frog's seen in the swamps early in the spring turn to coots in the fall and fly. This fact, however, if it is a fact, does'nt seem to detract in anyway from the financial value of the frog when he gets wings on his bacK and becomes a cute little coot. City Court. j Mayor Fowler disposed of the fol lowing cases this morning: . I Daniel Sheehan, keeping hogs in prescribed limits, judgment siis perrtUnl. . , ' ,. Geo. Walker, disorderly conduct, not guilty and discharged. Chas. Walker, disorderly con duct, guilty and fined $5. Robt. Davis, disorderly conduct, not guilty and discharged. W. H. Hasty, disorderly conduct, not guilty and discharged. Win. Henderson, disorderly con duct, guilty and fined $J0. Several cases were continued. The Orton. The Orton House is still to the fore. Great improvements are now bsin made and others are to be inaugurated when these are com- pleted. The rotunda reception rooms, reading rooms, halls, &c, are to be remodeled and painted,' the fourth flow is to be furnished in an excellent style and the house generally, from top to bottom, is to be overhauled. This is our antici pation of what is sure to be a busy season with a large influx of visitors during the winter months. The ra.tes of board have been reduced to $2.50 and upwards, to meet the demand of the times. - Effle -llsler. iThe Governess," from the pen of I. Swartz, the gifted writer, was presented to a large and fashionable audience at the Opera House last evening. Too much cannot be said in praise of this company. It is, by far, the best that the writer has seen in Wilmington for years. Miss Ellsler, as Zorah Warden, a governess, was in every way equal to the requirements of the charaq ter. The part is well adapted to her, and it gives her an excellent opportunity, which she takes, ad-; vantage of, to show her excellent qualification.- Miss JennieSte wart, as 3r. Ham -ilton9 a rich widow; and, Miss Lucille La Verne, as Cfiris&y Rogers, were both well up in their respective pasts. Little Gracie Sherwood was tqo cute for anything. In respond ing to the encore, she took the house by storm. Mr. Frank Weston, as Jarvis Coulter, did well.as he ajvyays does anci' was fully up to the stand ard, Mr, Orrin Johnson, i Jack RonerS) was good at times; but he followed put the old adage, in ad mirable style; If at first you don't succeed try, tryagain. AdolpeIIonore Segrist, an adventurer, was spl en didly overdone, by Mr. Geo. P. Sprague. . We hope to have Miss Ellsler with ns again; and can assure: her she will always meet a large and ap preciative house. The Goose lione. For the benefit of those who pin their faith to: the goose - bone, - we giver the following as the result of a Connecticut man who has already made his annual examination: "The. winter will be marked by more regular weather ! than last year. There will not be many days during which running water will freeze. The coldest weather will occur in the latter part of January, anddur ing that time will be several days of freezing. Christmas will be "green," but wet. and cold. January's en trance will be marked with warm days, gradually growing colder. The coldest day of the winter will be January 27th. The brief spell of cold weather will be succeeded by heavy thaxs, and the traditional January thaw wilt' come in Febru ary. This month will be a disagree able one, with heavy snows arid rains. An early and decided thaw is among the promises of the bone. February will burst into March with swollen mountain streams, and disastrous floods may be looked for. There will be an early spring.' Prosrress. In no way is the world's advance ment more admirably illustrated than in tracing its march along the path feading from ancient alchemy to. the practical and applied chem istry of to day. What more inter esting than to follow "through night to light," the developments from the occult to the open, plain and absolute science of the present? How diffe'rent the motives i&ctuat- i ing the sordid votary of alchemy with his magic, iueromancy and as trology Iroin the earnest uelver in chemistry? -the one to increase his power and wealth, 'the other to dis cover arid give to ine wonu some new truth for the benefit of science Knowledge gathered from the -Ara bian, Assyrian and Egyptain Kama coupled with honesty of purpose and a desire, to benefit mankind, evolved from alchemy the modern science of chemistry. The veil pt mystery wus thrown aside, and to day the place of the "dark worker" of the olden time is occupied by the German apotheker, the French apo thicaire, the English apothecary, and the American druggist, each full of knowledge, careful, honest and pro gressive, walking hand in " hand with the modern physician, follow ing the footsteps of the "scientific worker for the sake of science," pro inulgatory of science for the bene fit of mankind. Not less .wonderful than the modern American druggist is his modern ' drug s;ore, and blessed indeed is the community possessed of both. Wilmington has several drug typical establishments. Our friend, Dr. J. D. Nutt, 1 keeping step with the "forward march" " of our city , has metamorphosed th South East corner of Front arldMulberry streets into a genuine "thing of beauty." The old store was too small for the rapidly growing business, and has been fitted arid furnished in a com plete manner as a laboratory. The corner fs now the "drug store," a place entirely worthy of the name neat, roo 3 y, airy, , full, of sinlght by day and electric light by" night. The arrangement for the display of goods is perfect, and the prescrip tion department is so - constructed Jt J- ' as to gee rne mil uentut of every ray of current klayligfrx." For the convenience of customers, and in emergenqy cases a telephone has been provided," and can be used, either night or day. Dr. Nutt and Wilmington ar nioylng in the same direction. . , ., Syrup of Figs, Produced froui the laxative, and nutritious juice of California figsi combined with the medicinal virtues of plants, known to.be most beiiefi cial to tiie human system acts gent, ly, on the kidneys, liver and bowels, effectually cleansing the system, dis pelling c61ds f and headaches, and curing habitual constipation. . r AIAimiED.
