Dr. Holmes, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Savannah, Ga., occupied Dr. Pritchard's pulpit at the morning service at the First Baptist Church yesterday, and we understand that he preached a very able and scholarly sermon to a large congregation. It consists of a grate cornice designed to protect mantels from burning or being injured by fires kindled in grates; both the tops and sides. R. between this city and Black River will be open for traffic by the 20th, next Sunday. This is unofficial bnt the statement is gen erally accepted as a fact. Col. Gray found on his trip over it last Satur day that the road was in good con dition and saw no reason why it should not be opened at once for travel and freight so far as con structed, which is some thirty miles beyond the city. The only draw back seems to be the fact that the transfer steamer is not yet here. It is hoped, however, that the boat will be here in time to open the road at the date mentioned. She is now under construction at WiL mington, Del., and will be com manded by Capt Smith. She is so far completed that in a few days she will be ready to leave for this port and a crew wiii leave here to-morrow to bring her out. This crew will consist of Capt. W.' A. Snell, pilot, C. W. Anderson, mate,Charles Lindquist, engineer, and. Thomas Taylor, fireman, some of whom will be retained regularly in the employ of the company on the boat. Dirt, Debt and the Ievil.
