Mr. Chauncey M. Depew, mindfu
of the fate otthe average humorist,
says tnat he made his first great
mistake wheal ne delivered his first
funny speech. He didn't see it
then, but now he realizes it keenly.
A :
Gov. Fowle has been censured for
commuting the sentence of Bill
Alexander, the condemned JChar
lotte burglar, to imprisonment for
life. The Charlotte News published
a pretty plain editorial on the sub
ject. The New York Tribune sets up a
wail because there are so many ex
Confederate officers in; Congress.
And it is altogether because of the
fact that they are on the Democratic
side of the House, Hence these
tears.
The five doctors who attended the
late King of Portugal in his late ill
ness presented bills aggregating
$100,000. This ought not to cause
any great degree of surprise since
one doctor presented a bill for $160,
000 to the executors of the late
Samuel J. Tilden.
But few realize how small a State
Connecticut really is. It is only
about 70 miles one way and 90
another; say a space of ground ex
tending from Wilmington to Golds
boro on the North and from tho
ocean to TiUmberton and Fayette
ville on the West.
The abuse of tho pardoning power
by the Executive of State some
times leads to direful results. Gov.
Taylor, of Tennessee, pardoned five
men sentenced to be hung for mur
der and those men are now on the
warpath again, raising cain general
ly. How many lives are to be sacri.
ficed to the mistaken clemency of
the Governor remains to be seen.
Says a Washington correspondent)
"Gen. NathanielT. Banks goes wan
dering around the capitol these days
like a ghost which can't find its way
back. Not that he is thin and
shadowy. He looks as large and as
strong as Ire did -twenty years ago
although 74 winters have made his
thick thatch of hair and his mous"
tache snowy white. But he seems
not of this world withdrawn, ab
gtracted."
The death of an old colored man,
Unka Santa Quanta, is announced
as having occurred near Archer
Fla. He is said, on what is claimed
as srood authority, to have been 123
years old. He had during the course
of his lite five masters and six wives.
His sixth wife gave birth to a child
when ho was 108 years of age. When
very young he was captured on the
West coast of Africa by a slaver fit
ted out by some of the godly aboli
tionists of 'Boston and was sold in
Charleston.
The New York Mail and Express,
a cantankerous radical sheet, owned
by Elliot F. Shepard, who is princi
pally reraarkable.for having married
a female Vanderbilt, and for his
uncompromising hatred of a section
he has never seen and a people he
has never known, has seen fit to ac
cord a measure of unstinted praise to
Grover Cleveland, speaking of him
as not only a pure and able execu
tive but as one who commands the
respect of those most bitterly op
posed, to him. If this sort of thing
continues we fear that we will have
to drop Grover, and nominate! his
charming wife; but then weqoubt
if an angel would be eligible to the
Presidency. . ,

It is said that Senators Beck,
Pugh andVest have expressed wishes
for Mr. Allison's reelection as : the
Senator from Iowa. It is in bad
taste.'to say-the best we can of it.
7 Senator Edmunds, of Vermont,
has served longer in the United
States Senate than any of his col
leagues. On April 0, 1890, : he will
have been in the Senate, without a
single break 24 years. Mr. Edmunds
will be 63 in February. : He looks
his age.
New York Stan All the opposN
tion to Calvin S. Brice by Republi
can and Assistant Republican papers
amounts simply to the assertion
that no Vich man should be permit
ted in the Senate unless he be a Re
publican. Among Republicans only
the very lich are to be chosen. It is
easy to see. that it is Colonel Brice's
Democracy, not his wealth, that is
obnoxious to his opponents.
A New Yorker says: "Men marry
their secretaries and typewriters so
often in the business world of New
York that there is now no novelty
at all about the performance. I
have known dozens of such cases.
In our house alone four men have
married typewriters or women
eleYks within j the past twelve
months." This is a very unwise pub
lication. Thejtypewriter's profession
will be overcrowded henceforth and
forever.
Low-necked dresses are going to
be very popular with the lovely
young dudines, because if they
should catch cold wearing them,
haven't they got Dr. Bull's Cough
Syrup to cure them?
