In China, when the rain is too abundant, the officials set the images of the native gods out in the rain to Induce them to stop the down-pour. Two years ago it cost the Boston and Maine railroad $iO0,O00 to keep its tracka clear. This " Winter the snow plow has not made a trip. single The "woman who first circumnavi gated the globe "was a ' member of Bougainville's r famous expedition around the world in 1705 '09, which occupied just two . years aod four months. There is a man in New York who, makes a comfortable living by 'go ing with a whisk broom and bag, gathering up oats that horsas scat ter about their noon eating places in the streets. Two Tennessee boys tried some parlor magic, "according to printed directions," and the result was that one shot the other dead by accident. Overcome with horror he than fled up-stairs and cut his own throat. He was only twelve years old. . A newkind of shoe is being tried in the German army. The sole con sists of a sort of wire trellis, while the spaces between are filled up with gutta percha and resin. This new preparation is said to be cheaper, more durable and more clastic .than leather. Judge Advocate General Ingalls might make a codicil to his late speech and tell us about the treat ment of the negro in his own State of Kansas. JSot long since a colored man was fired from a seat in a thea tre and is now "suing the manager for damages. This, mind you, did not happen in Dixie's land but in the State which the bloody-minded Ingalls is proud to represent. In chronic cases of neuralgia, rheumatism or gout, where the dis turbing cause is a certain acid which poisons the blood, Salvation Oil should be used according to direc tions. This powerful pain-destroyer will in time dissolve the poison cir culating in the blood, and bring re lief when all others fail. Salvation Oil kills pain, and is only twenty five cents a bottle. C, MONDAY, FEBRUARY Judge Meares is in Charlotte to hold Mecklenburg Criminal Court, which convened thero to-day. The street crossings near the Post office are in a deplorable condition ard need immediate attention. The grip is rapidly disappearing but those -who have had it find it difficult to get entirely rid of the ef fects. . The Asheville Citizen thanks John Salmon for its first shad this season. I A curious coincidence. Our sammon : has been a shadder this rear. There seems to be but few theatri cal companies on the road now. The warm weather has caused most i of them to close their wings and go back to New York. 'What's the matter, sonny?" "The matter?" Whv, I don't have no time to play at-all just because Ma's got a medicine what'Ilcure our colds in a minute, every old - woman in our square wants me to go round to the siore and get her some." The committee appointed in the matter of beaut 'fying the Encamp ment Grounds at Wrightsville, of which Capt. R. M. Mclntire is the chairman, will commence the can vass of the city to morrow for the purpose of raising the amount nec essary, about $1,800. Mr. J. E. Humphrey has leased privileges oi Wrightsvile Beach, near the pavilion, and will open there about the first of April with dining rooms, saloon and poolrooms. The building will be large enough also to contain a number of'sleeping rooms. A one-story frame dwelling house, in Wallace's alley, between Third and Fourth and Walnut and Red Cross streets, fell to the ground yesterday and gave up the ghost. It was a dilapidated affair and yielded to the inroads of old age and general decrepitude. Mr. Chas. F. Browne has leased the Wessell building, foot of Mul berry street, and will remove into it next week and open with a large and handsome line of family gro ceries and fancy goods. The loca tion is directly opposite the j-ard of the,C. F. & Y. V. R. R. Second of tlie Series. The first hop given by the Social Club was such a decided success that the demand for another has caused the issue of cards for the second somewhat sooner than was intended. Litgen, J. II. Grot gen and M. G. Silvia. Place Ahx Dames. A city . correspondent, a lady, writes us to know, if the baby car riages are to be prohibited from oc cupying so much of the 6idewalk, why caqnot the greater nuisance of flying kites and playing football and using sling shots on the streets be abated? She says that these thipgs. are not only nuisances but that they are dangerous, and we fully agree with her. There is a penalty against flying kites in the streets and the throwing of stones, by sling or otherwise, and it is $5 for each of fense, but there is none against the playing of foot ball in the streets, so far as we can ascertain. The Delicacy of Woman. "Like the lily once mistress of the field, woman o'ften hangs her head and perishes, trusting to innocence and love to protect." Her eye may grow dim, her cheeks pale before her lips will leveal the secret of her suffering. Appreciating this ele ment in woman's nature, Dr. R. V. Pierce has prepared a remedy, called "Favorite Prescription," adapted especially for the diseases and weak nessespeculiar to women, and placed the same on sale by druggists. Ask for the "Favorite Prescription," and you can cure yourself without pub licity." and without beincr subject to j the examinations of surgeons. Always Keport It. Among other benevolent practises of the Y. M. C. A. is visiting the sick. This' is cheerfully done and every aid and comfort given that is in their power to render. These vis its are, of course, to young men, but they cannot be paid unless it is known who the sick are and they will therefore be glad to have infor mation of this kind lodged with them by the friends of the sick men. New men are being brought in every evening. Of the lodge at Clinton it says: "Clinton Lodge, No. 124, will i i prooaoiy participate in tne services of laying" the eorner-stone of the Methodist church, at.Clinton, N. C, on the 7th of March. Deputy Grand Sire Busbee, who visited the lodge not long since, speaksJLn high terms of the character of the men com posing 'it, and;predicts abltiit future for the lodge!" Strong: Men. Women love strong men. A weak man may excite their sympathy and a woman's careful tenderness soothe and soften the anguish of a weak man's soul, but the laughing, joy ous, warm, exuberant love of women dear, belongs to the men that art? strong and noble and kind. Then why will a man continue weak, and mean and peevish? An old gentleman writes: "B. B. B. gives me new life and strength. If there is anything that will make an old man young, it is B. B. B." Some men say, and women too, they never feel weak and mean ex cept in the spring. Why then feel weals and mean and nervous and prostrated in the spring time when lifeland spirit awakens with thrill ing buoyancv even the vegetable world? Musi you allow sluggish blood, inactive organic functions, rusty joints and general weakness to make your life miserable simply because the long winter has restrain ed your natural activitv? It need not be. If only you will use that pleasant and incomparable tonic blood purifier known as B. B. B. or Botanic Blood Balm your health in spring time will be all that you can wish. Try it this spring. Try it now. P. A. Shepherd, Norfolk, Va., "Au gust 10, 1888, writes: "I depend on B. B. B. for the preservat ion of my health. I have had it in my family now nearly two years, and in all that time have not had to have a doctor." . - Kefreslilnj and invigorating Delicious Soda Water as dVawn from Munds, Brothers' magnificeut new j soda fountain, at a temperature of j te.
