Engineer Joe Harris, recently of the Three JC road, was in'the city yesterday, and in. con versation with a Chronicle repre sentative, said that the report that the road had employed a negro engineer was true. Greenjfboro II 'tn-lmrin: A rsDlu tion was mlopteri at the meeting last night that (ireensbom furnish the sum of $10,KX) in rah and a site for the contemplated Bajtist Fe male Universitv. Wilson Mi rrot : We learn from the Tomahawk of the strangest and most wonderful freak of nature that has ever been recorded. It savs that the wife of John Young, who! Jives on the farm of Mr. Swain near ;Henderson. gave birth that week to three children in the following order: One was born on the .5th, another on the Gth and the other pn the 7th. Our punster John says it was kind of a tfi-weekly issue." Raleigh Call: It has been an nounced that the contract for open ing and completing the canal from Roanoke Falls to Weldon has been closed. The work involves the re opening and improving of a water way thirty five feet wide and nine miles long, with improved looks. ,The Graystone Granite and Con 'struction Company, of this city, of jwhich Mr. John H. Winder is Presi dent, has been awarded the con tract. The outlav for the work will ,be about $30,000. I Charlotte Xciv$: Several Charlotte parties have purchased the fine grounds and residence of Mr. John R. Hall or South Tryon street. The consideration was 13,00 The deed for the property is made to Capt. W. A. Barrier. " Mr. Hall intends to move to Florkfa, where he has made a business engagement. The friends of General Thomas F. Dray ton are glad to see hini out again, after a severe attack of the grip. ;Gen. Drayton, by the way, is now the only survivor of his class at jWest Point. Mr. Jefferson '.Davis was one of his classmates and there was another who lived in New York, who died a few days ago, leaving General Drayton the sole survivor. Goldsboro Argus: Goldsboro has had another fire of considerable im portance that might have been promptly extinguished if sufficient water had been available. The foundry building of the Wayne Agricultural Works was destroyed last night about 7 o'clock, and al though the two engines of the fire department were early,on the scene they could do nothing' for lack of water. The fire is supposed to have originated in the wooden roofing, as that is where it was first discov ered, probably by sparks from the furnace. The building was insured for $1,000, but it is thought that the loss will exceed that sum by several ; hundred dollars. The main build ing was unharmed, and the foundry j will be rebuilt at once. Raleigh JVews and Observer: At a point among the Sauratown moun tains in Stokes county, and a few -fniles from Piedmont Springs, it is I said there is a cave which has for a long time beei a source of mystery : to the people of that immediate neighborhood. and wliitjh wasrecent ly visited by a party of tourists. Jjately th?re have been some as ' tonishing developments there. A short time ago just at the hour of dawn a milky white smoke was seen ascending from the mouth of the cave. It arose for a few feet above the aperture and then crept along the ground in a long low rolling pillar. It preserved a well defined volume and went to a distance oi at least a mile before it began to dis sipate into the air. No heat can be felt by one who stands over the mouth of the cave and a stone thrown into it is never heard to strike bottom. The mysterious cave has excited the profoundest awe anil wonder of evervbodv who lias visited it. Consumption Curable. It cinot be too often impressed on every one that the much dreaded consumption (which is only lung scrofula), is curable, if attended to at once, and that the primary symp toms, so often mistaken as signs of diseased lungs, are only symptoms of an unhealthy liver. To this or gan the svstem is indebted for pure blood, and to pure blood the lungs are indebted no less than to pure air for healthy action. If the former is polluted, we have the hacking cough, the hectic flush, night sweats, and a whole train of symptoms re sembling consumption. Rouse the liver to healthy action by the use of Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discov ery, take healthy exercise, live in the open air, and all symptoms of consumption will disappear. For weak lungs, spitting of blood, short ness of breath, chronic nasal ca- "tarrh, bronchitis, asthma, severe coughs, and khidred affections, it is a most wonderful remedy. The k "Discovery"' is guaranteed to cure in all cases of diseases for which if; is recommended, or money paid for it will bepromptly'refuuded.
