There was an alarm of fire last night, about 0:30 o'clock, turned in from box 35, corner of Eighth .and Market streets. It was caused by sparks on the roof of Mr. I). Mc. Eachern's new house, on Seventh, between Dock and Orange streets, which came from a tinner's furnace which had been left there. The roof did not ignite. Capr. Lord in l!etti. A distressing report was circulat ed here today to thr effect that Capt. George Lord, whose serious indisposition we have previously re ported, died yesterday afternoon, but wo are glad to be able to contra dict it here. We heard directly from him at 4 o'clock this afternoon and at that time lie was reported . as much improved better, it is said, than he had been in a week. We hope to see him abroad again at an early day. The Ball Last Night. The anniversary ball of Howard Relief Fire Engine Co. No. 1, given last night in Adrian Hall, was large ly attended. The music, rendered by the Italian band, was very fine and the floor was full of dancers. At 12 o'clock supper was served and after that dancing was resumed and kept up with much spirit until the early hours. It was in every jvay a delightful affair and the committee have received many congratulations on the excellent result of their la? bors. - Of Interest to Shippers. Here is an item of interest to ship pers. The following will hereafter be appended to all bills of lading is sued by the C. C. R. R: "It is agreed that after due notice to the consignee or owner of the ar rival of the property described here in at the destination or point of delivery named in bill of lading, and a reasonable period allowed there after for its removal from ware houses and cars, storage charges, as usually applicable at such point of delivery, may be made and collected onthe property remaining undeliver ed; and such demurrage charges made and collected on loaded cars as the delivering roads may have established.' lSright'8 Disease. Bonds Well Placed. Messrs. Brown & Lownders, bank ers, of Baltimore, have closed out the entire issue of $ 850, 000 first mort gage 6 per cent, gold bonds, series C, of the Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley Railroad Company. The bonds were placed on sale six days ago. The price paid was par and accrued interest, the purchasers se curing them for investment account, The principal is due June 1,1910, and the interest is payable in New York in June and December. The bonds will be listed on the Baltimore Stock Exchange in a few days. Good News for Coal 1ealers. It will be cold to morrow morning and you can gamble on this predic tion. At 8 o'clock this morning a storm centre was developing along the North Atlantic coast. At the same time a very high barometric pressure was advancing from the Northwest, accompanied by a cold wave." McFarlane, Treasurer of the North State Improvement Company, all arrived here yesterday afternoon in a private coach attached to the freight train on the C. F. & Y. V. R. R. They made a careful inspec tion of the road as they came down. They remained in the city to-day and will return to-morrow. "Where Did You Get That nat?" It is too good to lose, and we will tell it. The other night, when the Germania Cornet Band serenaded Mr. and Mrs. F. W. E. Peschau, the gentleman,as soon as he heard them went out immediately to the gate to endeavor to get them to break their well known rule on serenading occasions and to enter the house. As he hurried out he took the first hat on the rack that came to hand, which proved to be that of his little boy. With this perched precariously on his head he went up to the band and begged them to enter. They declined but volunteered to play another piece. A commission delunatico inquirendo was called today to examine into the mental condition of a colored man about 22 years old, by the name of Frank McDonald. Capt, Dunbar Davis, of the Cape Fear Life Saving Station, came into Southport at 2:15 o'clock this after noon with a boat's crew. He re ports that the British Schr. Demoi zellc, of St John's, N. B., from Mac rois for New York, loaded witl sugar, is off Frying Pan Shoals with her sails gone. The crew have re fused to do duty. The steam tug Alex. Voss were interred yesterday afternoon in Bellevne Cemetery. The services took place at St. Paul's Lutheran Church and the body was followed to the grave by a long line of mourn- era. xiitr uuicuciivir cicmui Association and the Christian As sociation of St. Paul's Church, of both of which deceased was a mem ber, were in line in the procession. The pall-bearers were Messrs. L. Vollers, John F. Rulfs, J. H. Thees, B. H. J. Ahrens, John T. Piatt and E. T. Suden. The Fayetteville Military. Sergeant Pemberton,of the F. I. L I., arrived here yesterday afternoon to make arrangements for the pro jected visit of his company to this city, in celebration of their anni versary. The company will leave Fayetteville on Monday next, at 8 o'clock, on a special excursion train chartered by them, and will arrive here about 11:30. They will be met at the Cape Fear & Yadkin Valley wharf by the Wilmington Light In fantry and all will go to the Sound immediately, where the target practice will be held. An oyster roast will be given to the Fayetteville boys by the Wil mington Light Infantry while at the Sound, and as soon as the shooting is overall will return to Wilmington, where the Independent Company will spend a short while, leaving for Fayetteville about o'clock in the afternoon. It is expected that there will be about 3-j men in the ranks and that a large number of ladies ami gentle men will accompany them on their visit to this city.
